\n\tPaddington<\/a> Bear has found a new pair of writers to come up with his next big screen adventure and looks to have secured a director as well. <\/p>\n

\n\tVariety can exclusively confirm that Armando Iannucci<\/a>, the Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated Scotsman best known for creating hit satirical shows \u201cVeep\u201d and \u201cThe Thick of It,\u201d is set to turn his pen to London\u2019s most beloved four-pawed Peruvian expat and will write the upcoming fourth film in Studiocanal<\/a>\u2018s hit \u201cPaddington\u201d franchise. Iannucci will be joined on screenplay duties by his long-standing and fellow Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated co-writer Simon Blackwell, who served as a key writer on both \u201cVeep\u201d and \u201cThe Thick of It.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tMeanwhile, Variety hears that Dougal Wilson<\/a>, the award-winning commercials and music videos director who made his feature debut with the third film, \u201cPaddington in Peru,\u201d is in talks to return.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPaddington 4,\u201d follows 2014\u2019s \u201cPaddington,\u201d 2017\u2019s \u201cPaddington 2\u201d and 2024\u2019s \u201cPaddington in Peru,\u201d and a combined global box office in excess of $800 million. Paul King directed the first two instalments (he wrote the first and co-wrote the second with Simon Farnaby), with Wilson taking over directing duties on the third (which was written by Mark Burton, Jon Foster and James Lamont). <\/p>\n

\n\tRosie Alison (\u201cPaddington,\u201d \u201cPaddington 2,\u201d \u201cPaddington in Peru\u201d), who first came up with the idea to give Michael Bond\u2019s red-hatted bear the live-action-meets-VFX big screen treatment some 20 years ago, continues as producer for Heyday Films.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe fourth Paddington movie was only officially announced earlier this year. At CinemaCon, Studiocanal CEO and Canal+ Chief Content Officer Anna Marsh revealed that the film was in development, but shared little else other than that \u201cworld-renowned comedy writers\u201d had been hired. <\/p>\n

\n\tIannucci has earned his stripes many times over as a comedy writer, having also helped create the iconic TV character Alan Partridge, written for \u201cThe Day Today\u201d and, more recently, created HBO\u2019s \u201cAvenue 5,\u201d while on film he co-wrote and directed \u201cIn the Loop\u201d (which was Oscar nominated for best adapted screenplay in 2010) and \u201cThe Death of Stalin.\u201d Blackwell, meanwhile, is also known for creating the Brit TV dark comedy show \u201cBreeders\u201d and sitcom \u201cBack,\u201d helped co-write \u201cIn the Loop\u201d and also co-wrote Iannucci\u2019s last feature film, \u201cThe Personal History of David Copperfield\u201d (which starred the voice of Paddington, Ben Whishaw). <\/p>\n

\n\tBut taking on Paddington Bear is several giant leaps from Charles Dickens adaptations, TV sitcoms or political satire, and will be no marmalade sandwich-laden picnic. <\/p>\n

\n\tPerfectly balancing the duffel coat-wearing ursine\u2019s impeccably well-mannered kindness with his endearingly clumsy tendency to land himself in trouble helped elevate the critically-adored \u201cPaddington 2\u201d to the status of cinematic masterpiece (it was for a period the highest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes). <\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking to Variety around the release of \u201cPaddington in Peru,\u201d producer Alison said director Wilson was chosen partly because he was \u201cPaddingtonian\u201d and embodied all the positive values of the bear. No doubt in Iannucci and Blackwell she\u2019s found the same qualities.
