It\u2019s so hot in the UK, even time is melting. Over the past couple of days, records for temperatures in May have broken across Europe, including the UK, and Tuesday sees more of the same. While it would seem silly for Cycling Weekly to encourage you not to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/training\/what-to-wear-cycling-a-temperature-by-temperature-cycling-dress-guide\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/training\/what-to-wear-cycling-a-temperature-by-temperature-cycling-dress-guide\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/training\/what-to-wear-cycling-a-temperature-by-temperature-cycling-dress-guide\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cycle on a sunny day,<\/a> think about it carefully. We will have to become used to days when we have to limit our riding because of the heat. Just as we do in the winter when it\u2019s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/20-hacks-to-beat-the-cold-and-keep-riding-through-the-winter\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/20-hacks-to-beat-the-cold-and-keep-riding-through-the-winter\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/20-hacks-to-beat-the-cold-and-keep-riding-through-the-winter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">too cold or wet<\/a>. This is a kicker for all of us who spend winter dreaming about the end of the rain and cold, but extreme heat is an issue to be concerned about too. Obviously, there are ways of beating the heat; cycling earlier or later, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/latest-news\/hot-weather-cycling-five-tips-to-help-you-keep-your-cool-180053\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/latest-news\/hot-weather-cycling-five-tips-to-help-you-keep-your-cool-180053\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/latest-news\/hot-weather-cycling-five-tips-to-help-you-keep-your-cool-180053\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wearing the right clothing<\/a>, seeking shadier routes, and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/the-complete-guide-to-sports-drinks-recovery-31494\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/the-complete-guide-to-sports-drinks-recovery-31494\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/the-complete-guide-to-sports-drinks-recovery-31494\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drinking pretty much as much water as possible<\/a>. But sometimes the best plan is to not touch the bike at all.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-362fdabb-86a6-4acc-b807-5b2a8fe4c6c2-1\">For those outside of the UK, it might seem like our country has been swept with hysteria whenever it gets a bit warm. Perhaps you\u2019re reading this from a country where it is regularly hotter, or you just think that I am being a wimp about the heat. It might surprise non-UK residents that air conditioning in the home is a luxury, not something that everyone has. These temperatures cause people\u2019s brains to shut down, for sleep to be disrupted, for the world to seem a bit like it is ending. Change is needed, both to try and arrest the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/it-could-get-to-40-c-at-the-tour-down-under-this-week-how-hot-is-too-hot-for-cycling\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/it-could-get-to-40-c-at-the-tour-down-under-this-week-how-hot-is-too-hot-for-cycling\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/it-could-get-to-40-c-at-the-tour-down-under-this-week-how-hot-is-too-hot-for-cycling\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">climate catastrophe<\/a>, and to make our world cope better with wild weather, but let\u2019s think about cycling first.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just the UK where it\u2019s hotter than ever for May \u2013 more than 350 towns across France set records for temperatures on Monday \u2013 and more extreme heat is on its way. As some revel in these conditions, we should all reflect that it\u2019s not normal, and that it might impact our way of life soon. That includes cycling.<\/p>\n<p>Physical exertion, like cycling, is harder in these conditions. When temperatures exceed the mid 30s, your body is primarily focused on cooling you down, not on going fast. It\u2019s not worth pushing yourself to chase a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/strava-koms-just-keep-getting-harder-to-claim-heres-everything-i-did-to-take-two-local-crowns\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/strava-koms-just-keep-getting-harder-to-claim-heres-everything-i-did-to-take-two-local-crowns\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/strava-koms-just-keep-getting-harder-to-claim-heres-everything-i-did-to-take-two-local-crowns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strava PB<\/a> or complete your longest ride) on days like this. You might see professionals cope in the crushing heat of July at the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/tour-de-france\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/tour-de-france\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/tour-de-france\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tour de France<\/a>, but they train specifically for this, have the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/tights-buckets-and-baths-how-teams-at-the-tour-de-france-are-keeping-their-riders-cool\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/tights-buckets-and-baths-how-teams-at-the-tour-de-france-are-keeping-their-riders-cool\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/tights-buckets-and-baths-how-teams-at-the-tour-de-france-are-keeping-their-riders-cool\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ice vests<\/a>, and endless supply of liquids and the support car just behind.<\/p>\n<p>All of this is to say, don\u2019t beat yourself up about skipping a ride this week. Wait for cooler times, maybe go out earlier than usual, and try not to worry too much about being slower than usual. Work with the heat, don\u2019t try and work against it.
