{"id":695273,"date":"2026-05-26T17:13:16","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T17:13:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/695273\/"},"modified":"2026-05-26T17:13:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T17:13:16","slug":"as-alberta-battles-with-separation-saskatchewans-moe-affirms-party-wants-to-stay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/695273\/","title":{"rendered":"As Alberta battles with separation, Saskatchewan\u2019s Moe affirms party wants to stay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says while separatist agitation bubbles away in Alberta \u2013 and even in his own province \u2014 his party stands with Confederation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe support a strong and growing province of Saskatchewan with the united nation of Canada,\u201d Moe told reporters Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(But) again, those frustrations shouldn\u2019t be discounted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moe made the comments on the first day of the western premiers meeting. He and six other premiers from Western Canada and the three territories have gathered at an upscale lodge near the Rocky Mountains west of Calgary for the meeting, which ends Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The annual get-together usually revolves around shared concerns and projects. This year\u2019s event began on a tetchy note Monday when B.C. Premier David Eby publicly wondered why they should work on getting things built as Alberta pushes the envelope on breaking it all apart.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, in turn, said Eby and previous B.C. leaders need to understand that their efforts to landlock Alberta\u2019s oil wealth helped sow the separatist bitterness now being reaped.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/national.jpg\" alt=\"Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you'll never miss the day's top stories.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you&#8217;ll never miss the day&#8217;s top stories.<\/p>\n<p>Moe said while his Saskatchewan Party\u2019s position is clear, he would follow provincial law, which mandates a non-binding plebiscite on a topic if at least 15 per cent of electors sign up to ask for one.<\/p>\n<p>Smith has said there is general frustration over federal government policies over the last decade believed to have stymied development.<\/p>\n<p>Moe agreed. \u201cWhat you have heard about, with respect to the last 10 years of building frustration in Alberta, those are present in Saskatchewan as well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Politics<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hear about them almost on a daily basis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moe said he understands the \u201calienation frustration that many feel in Saskatchewan\u201d with federal policy under previous administrations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the rear-view mirror look,\u201d Moe said<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if we continue to look in that rear view, you\u2019re going to increasingly remain frustrated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alberta\u2019s referendum question will be put to citizens on Oct. 19. It will ask if they want to stay in Canada or begin the process of a formal referendum to leave.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Next door, a group called the Saskatchewan Prosperity Project is making a similar bid to get the wheels in motion on separation.
