\n\tChristopher Nolan<\/a> is set to be featured in a complete retro by the Toronto\u00a0International Film Festival\u2019s summer marquee series that will start ahead of the July 17 North-American theatrical premiere of \u201cThe Odyssey.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe series at TIFF<\/a> Lightbox cinema, titled \u201cChristopher Nolan: Grand Designs,\u201d will run July 8\u2013Aug. 20 and feature screenings of Nolan\u2019s works exclusively on 35mm and 70mm film.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tNolan made his directorial debut with the low-budget black-and-white noir \u201cFollowing\u201d that launched from the Toronto fest\u2019s Discovery section in 1998. He last returned to the festival in September 2017 with a special screening of \u201cDunkirk\u201d in IMAX 70mm in celebration of IMAX\u2019s 50th anniversary. Nolan is not expected to attend the upcoming TIFF summer series retro.<\/p>\n

\n\tTo launch the retro The Ringer and Spotify\u2019s The Big Picture will host a live recording of their podcast at TIFF Lightbox with Sean Fennessey and Amanda Dobbins, according to a statement.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe retrospective celebrating the self-taught Oscar-winning director will feature all 12 of Nolan\u2019s features, several of which projected in 70mm format. They comprise: \u201cMemento\u201d (2000), \u201cInsomnia\u201d (2002), \u201cBatman Begins\u201d (2005), \u201cThe Prestige\u201d (2006), \u201cThe Dark Knight\u201d (2008), \u201cInception\u201d (2010), \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises\u201d (2012), \u201cInterstellar\u201d (2014), \u201cDunkirk\u201d (2017), \u201cTenet\u201d (2020), and \u201cOppenheimer\u201d (2023).<\/p>\n

\n\tAdditional programming of the Nolan retro at TIFF Lightbox includes a presentation of Philip Kaufman\u2019s \u201cThe Right Stuff,\u201d a film Nolan has \u201ccited as one of his favourites,\u201d according to the statement. A \u201cquote along\u201d screening of Greta Gerwig\u2019s \u201cBarbie\u201d is also planned to screen directly before the \u201cOppenheimer\u201d screening on July 18 \u201cas a playful nod to the Summer of 2023\u2019s \u201cBarbenheimer\u201d phenomenon.<\/p>\n

\n\tSeparately, TIFF\u00a0has also announced a marquee screening series of Japanese anime cinema titled \u201cDrawn Universes: Visions in Animation\u201d curated by celebrated Japanese animation auteur Masaaki Yuasa<\/a> that will run in November and December 2026. The event\u2019s exact dates are still being decided. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt is an honour to curate this series for TIFF, \u201c said Masaaki \u2013 who is known for celebrated works such as \u201cMind Game,\u201d \u201cLu Over the Wall,\u201d and the Golden Globe-nominated \u201cInu-Oh\u201d \u2013 in the statement. \u201cAs I begin shaping the lineup, I am excited to look back at the works that sparked my own imagination from a young age, and to curate a series with a focus on the artists who have defined the genre and the incredible creators who continue to push the visual possibilities of anime today. I hope to bring a programme that truly surprises and delights everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe marquee series at TIFF Lightbox was envisioned to present big artists and ideas that capture and shape popular imagination,\u201d said Anita Lee, chief programming officer at TIFF.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cChristopher Nolan is one of the most influential voices in contemporary cinema today where each new film is a cultural event,\u201d she added, \u201cwhile anime continues to explode as an art force shaping global entertainment across mediums.
