Then, nearly all of them \u2014 minus defender Chris Richards, whose club team Crystal Palace is set to play in a European tournament final Wednesday \u2014 flew to New York City for a public reveal on a stage in front of hundreds of fans and was televised live on Fox. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m grateful to be in this position. It&#8217;s exactly what I want,&#8221; said Pulisic. &#8220;You only have a World Cup in your home country once in your life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The tournament begins in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifa.com\/en\/tournaments\/mens\/worldcup\/canadamexicousa2026\/articles\/match-schedule-fixtures-results-teams-stadiums\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">just over two weeks<\/a>, with games <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/06\/16\/1105562734\/us-cities-hosting-2026-world-cup-announcement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hosted in 16 cities<\/a> across the U.S., Mexico and Canada. It will mark the first time that World Cup games are being held in the U.S. since 1994, when the tournament helped spark Americans&#8217; interest in soccer, leading to the formation of Major League Soccer and widespread participation in youth soccer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When you think of the 2026 World Cup, you think of pressure,&#8221; said Christian Roldan, the Seattle Sounders midfielder who made the roster in 2022 but did not appear in a game. &#8220;But the pressure comes with privilege. We have the opportunity to really motivate, inspire the next generation at this World Cup. Clary\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most surprising inclusion is Alejandro Zendejas, a talented forward for the Mexican team Club Am\u00e9rica who had earned limited minutes under Pochettino and had not played for the USMNT since last September.<\/p>\n<p>The prominent snubs are Lyon midfielder Tanner Tessmann and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/07\/09\/nx-s1-5461485\/diego-luna-usmnt-soccer-world-cup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Real Salt Lake midfielder Diego Luna<\/a>, a fan favorite who has appeared in much of the marketing around the USMNT ahead of the World Cup. Both Tessmann and Luna had been dealing with injuries this spring but were thought to be available for the World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Coach Mauricio Pochettino has experimented with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/03\/28\/nx-s1-5764272\/world-cup-usmnt-us-soccer-belgium-portugal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">variety of lineups<\/a> since he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/09\/10\/g-s1-18047\/mauricio-pochettino-usmnt-coach-us-soccer-chelsea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hired in 2024<\/a> to steer the USMNT through this summer. But I think we made the best decision to be competitive and to try to win.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Half of the squad represented the U.S. at the World Cup in Qatar four years ago. I couldn&#8217;t really believe it.
