WASHINGTON \u2013 Canada and the Bahamas said on Tuesday they would\u00a0temporarily ban residents from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and South Sudan amid an Ebola outbreak.<\/p>\n
Residents from those \u200bcountries will be banned from entering Canada for 90 \u200cdays \u200cstarting Wednesday, the Canadian government said. It said \u200bthe temporary border measure aimed to reduce the risk of Ebola entering and spreading within Canada.<\/p>\n
The Bahamian government \u2060added that its entry restrictions would take immediate effect and remain in \u2060place for a period of 30 days, subject to review by the Caribbean country\u2019s health ministry.<\/p>\n
Reuters \u200bfirst reported that the \u2060archipelago would impose such a travel ban. The World Health Organization on Friday raised to \u201cvery \u2060high\u201d the risk of \u200bthe Bundibugyo strain of Ebola turning \u200binto a national outbreak in the Democratic Republic of \u200bCongo \u200cand has declared the outbreak there and in Uganda an emergency of international concern.<\/p>\n
Last week, Washington banned noncitizens who had traveled to the DRC, Uganda or South Sudan \u200cin recent weeks from entering the United States.<\/p>\n
Canadian citizens, permanent residents and other foreign nationals who have been in affected areas in recent weeks and do not have symptoms will have \u200bto \u200bquarantine for 21 days from May 30, according \u200bto a statement from Canada\u2019s public health agency.<\/p>\n
The \u2060Bahamas also announced enhanced health screenings and possible quarantines for foreigners who were present in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda or South Sudan within 30 days \u200bof arriving in the Caribbean country.<\/p>\n
