Over 100 people installed 300 painted fish in the Stream of Dreams mural on the City Centre Detention Pond fence in celebration of World Fish Migration Day on Saturday (May 23) in Surrey’s Whalley neighbourhood.

Attendees learned about Quibble Creek, a salmon-bearing stream that the detention pond flows through, and participated in various activities teaching them about salmon and their habitat in Surrey.

The free event was hosted by Surrey’s Salmon Habitat Restoration Program (SHaRP) and Stream of Dreams members and volunteers.

“It was a wonderful event, and we were excited to see community members come together to celebrate fish migration, learn about local salmon habitats, and take part in hands-on activities along the creek,” Zeeyad Monir, marketing and media team lead for SHaRP.

The program celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2025. Members of the program can be seen in the community from May to November, educating the public on “salmon stewardship.”

“SHaRP’s goal is to protect and improve Surrey’s stream habitats as our city grows and develops. SHaRP is a City of Surrey initiative that began in 1996 and has involved over 760 people in active stream restoration works,” reads a post on surrey.ca about the program.

The mural was created by the Stream of Dreams mural society, which started in B.C. in 2003 to help “communities learn where their local watershed is, where their water comes from, where it’s going and what they can do to prevent water pollution,” reads a post on streamofdreams.org.

Over 18 elementary schools in Surrey have Stream of Dreams murals.

Community unites for World Fish Migration Day: adds to mural in Surrey Published 3:17 pm Tuesday, May 26,…

[194299
49,48,163792,87674
post-696727","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-surrey","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-lower-mainland","tag-surrey
["GET
