{"id":69770,"date":"2025-08-14T19:38:16","date_gmt":"2025-08-14T19:38:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/69770\/"},"modified":"2025-08-14T19:38:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T19:38:16","slug":"packed-school-lunch-prices-rise-3-amid-inflation-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/69770\/","title":{"rendered":"Packed school lunch prices rise 3% amid inflation: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ann Hermes\/The Christian Science Monitor via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Even a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is not immune to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/10000793\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflation<\/a>&#8216;s bite.<\/p>\n<p>Although grocery prices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/12\/heres-the-inflation-breakdown-for-july-2025-in-one-chart.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cooled in July<\/a>, food costs, overall, are trending higher, according to the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/cpi.nr0.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">consumer price index<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of food cost inflation, parents who pack lunches for their school-age children will pay more in the coming academic year compared with last year, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/insights\/industry\/consumer-products\/school-lunch-costs-healthy-eating.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">new report by Deloitte<\/a> also found.<\/p>\n<p>For parents and other caregivers, the\u00a0average\u00a0daily cost of packing\u00a0a lunch\u00a0for school is now $6.15, according to Deloitte.\u00a0That&#8217;s\u00a0up 3%\u00a0on average,\u00a0compared with the start of the 2024 school year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The high point of inflation was really around 2022, but grocery costs today are 20% more than they were five years ago,&#8221; said Natalie Martini,\u00a0Deloitte&#8217;s U.S. retail and consumer sector leader and a mother of two school-age children.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s driving &#8220;a significant increase in the cost to bring a lunch from home,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/28\/trump-world-tariff-trade.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blanket tariffs<\/a> could also bring\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/29\/trump-tariffs-food-prices.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">higher prices<\/a> on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/13\/how-to-save-on-groceries-amid-food-price-inflation.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> certain foods<\/a>, experts say, including fresh produce, nuts and cheese.<\/p>\n<p>A separate <a href=\"https:\/\/tcf.org\/content\/commentary\/eight-ways-trump-is-making-the-back-to-school-season-more-expensive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> by progressive think tanks Groundwork Collaborative and The Century Foundation found that families will pay nearly $163 more this year for school lunch staples \u2014 a 5.4% jump over last year \u2014 in part because of Trump&#8217;s tariff agenda.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From lunch boxes and notebooks to juice boxes and pencils, parents are being squeezed at every turn,&#8221; Liz Pancotti, Groundwork Collaborative&#8217;s managing director of policy and advocacy, said in an email.<\/p>\n<p>Also, many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/23\/trump-tariffs-inflation-back-to-school-shopping.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">school supplies<\/a> are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/11\/trump-tariffs-back-to-school-shopping.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at least 20% more expensive<\/a> than they were pre-pandemic, according to a CNBC analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Although school-provided lunches are almost always cheaper and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/08\/19\/universal-free-school-lunches-harris-walz-campaign.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sometimes free<\/a>, about 42% of the parents polled said their children bring lunch from home on most school days, according to Deloitte&#8217;s report. While price is a key issue, healthy eating was the top concern among caregivers, Deloitte found.<\/p>\n<p>Yet those polled said they would switch from name brands to store brands or substitute a cheaper main lunch item, like a less expensive sandwich, to cut costs.<\/p>\n<p>Deloitte surveyed more than 1,200 caregivers of school-age children in May.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline0\"\/>School lunches are getting more expensive<\/p>\n<p>School-provided lunches, which cost <a href=\"https:\/\/schoolnutrition.org\/about-school-meals\/school-meal-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">around $3<\/a> on average, are not shielded from price hikes either, largely due to the\u00a0rising costs of food and labor in addition to staffing shortages, according to the most recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/schoolnutrition.org\/resource\/position-paper-2025-trends-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">School Nutrition Association annual survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The cost of elementary and secondary school lunches <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/archives\/cpi_06112025.htm#cpipress1.f.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rose 3.3%<\/a>\u00a0in May 2025 relative to May 2024, according to a consumer price index report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.<\/p>\n<p>Key legislative reforms over a decade ago paved the way for healthier meals at school with more fruits, vegetables and whole grains on the menu, experts say.
