{"id":697932,"date":"2026-05-27T21:28:20","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T21:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/697932\/"},"modified":"2026-05-27T21:28:20","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T21:28:20","slug":"canadas-big-banks-brace-for-more-bad-loans-focus-on-de-risking-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/697932\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada\u2019s big banks brace for more bad loans, focus on \u2018de-risking\u2019 &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/canadian-banks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canada\u2019s biggest private banks<\/a> are reporting quarterly earnings this week, and the first three to do so have signalled they are continuing to set aside money in case some loans, like mortgages, default.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>All three say economic pressures continue to mount and that they will focus on \u201cde-risking,\u201d with one bank in particular saying that the risk scenario for some of its customers is being treated like a <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/recession\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201crecession<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a credit cycle, we may not be in a recession, but we are treating the softness as one in terms of helping our customers and de-risking wherever we can,\u201d said Piyush Agrawal, Bank of Montreal\u2019s chief risk officer, in a conference call with analysts and shareholders on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t see this as a stress scenario. To me, we are managing very well through this, and we\u2019ve taken early action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>This comes as <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/iran\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the war in the Middle East<\/a> has created an extra layer of uncertainty, including how <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/oil-prices\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">higher oil and energy prices<\/a> will affect inflation in Canada, as consumers continue to grapple with an already high <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/cost-of-living\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cost of living<\/a> and weakening job market.<\/p>\n<p>A recent report from Equifax shows <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11864673\/mortgage-delinquency-ontario-bc-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the number of homeowners in Ontario and British Columbia who have missed a mortgage payment multiple times is increasing<\/a>, including by 52 per cent year-over-year in Ontario and by 36 per cent in B.C.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/bank-of-montreal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bank of Montreal<\/a> says although it saw an overall positive quarter, it set aside an additional $739 million in loan loss provisions. These are extra funds banks use to cover some of their losses in case customers fail to pay off their loans.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Examining the Bank of Canada\u2019s interest rate decision'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/GNMBOCINTERESTRATESTILL.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t6:31<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tExamining the Bank of Canada\u2019s interest rate decision\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Although that figure from BMO was a smaller increase than the $1.05 billion one year earlier, the rate of delinquencies are expected to climb.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the consumer book, as we have been highlighting, there continues to be pressure and delinquency rates have been in an upward trend, reflecting elevated insolvencies and rising unemployment,\u201d said Agrawal.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/national.jpg\" alt=\"Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you'll never miss the day's top stories.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you&#8217;ll never miss the day&#8217;s top stories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has translated into higher provisions in the unsecured portfolio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11840238\/youth-unemployment-canada-april-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Unemployment in Canada was last measured at 6.9 per cent in April<\/a>, which was 0.2 per cent higher than the previous month, and about 18,000 jobs were also lost.<\/p>\n<p>If someone loses their job, then they may not have an income for a period of time, and if they were also trying to pay down a loan like a mortgage, then a loss of income means they could wind up defaulting on those loans if they\u2019re unable to pay it off.<\/p>\n<p>Agrawal also said the bank is actively working with clients to help them through delinquencies where possible, and that nine out of 10 delinquent borrowers are \u201cself-correcting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cWe want to see our consumers in their homes, and we are working with them to find them good handy solutions to come out of the delinquency stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'BIV: Rising mortgage delinquency rates in B.C.'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1779917299_968_WEB_BIV_BUSINESS-WEB.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2:23<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBIV: Rising mortgage delinquency rates in B.C.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Bank of Nova Scotia is anticipating more loan losses down the line too, as the bank increased its provisions by $1.2 billion.
