It has long been speculated that the Philadelphia Eagles<\/a> and New England Patriots<\/a> have a handshake deal involving wide receiver A.J. Brown and it will be finalized on or after June 1, when the dead money figure for Philly goes down.<\/p>\n

But in the words of the great Lee Corso: “Not so fast, my friend!”<\/p>\n

Multiple NFL insiders are now reporting that there is no deal agreed upon and the reason is the two teams can’t agree on compensation.<\/p>\n

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Eagles want a first-round pick for Brown and the Patriots are not willing to give up that much.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Patriots not willing to give up a first round pick as of right now, that means they\u2019re not particularly close and that means there\u2019s a chance this could drag on for the foreseeable future,” Rapoport said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fellow NFL insider Josina Anderson also mentioned the compensation as an issue, although she didn’t go into detail other than to say the deal could eventually see a “swapping of picks.”<\/p>\n

“A league source tells me this morning that the Eagles and Patriots have recently ‘grappled’ over the component of the total trade compensation for AJ Brown that could involve a ‘swapping of picks,'” Anderson explained<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“I don\u2019t know who else needs to hear this. Patriots-Eagles trade talks for AJ Brown are not complete. This is not a debate,” she added<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“It doesn\u2019t mean it won\u2019t get done, and that currently it\u2019s not likely, it just means that there is some recent haggling going on and a deal is not officially 100% sealed,” Anderson concluded.<\/p>\n

While we believe this deal will ultimately get done, it just goes to show that nobody should be writing it in pen just yet.<\/p>\n

We wouldn’t rule out another team swooping in, either.<\/p>\n

Is A.J. Brown worth a first-round pick?<\/p>\n

Brown is a No. 1 wide receiver who can make a huge impact on a Patriots offense that is currently lacking a true alpha in the wide receivers room.<\/p>\n

But he also comes with risk, as there is long-term concern for Brown’s knee<\/a> that could lead to a decline sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n

The fact that Brown is under contract through 2029 is a double-edged sword. New England won’t have to worry about his bailing after one season, but Brown’s deal could become an albatross in the next few years if he loses a step.<\/p>\n

That said, with the Patriots’ need at wide receiver, and with the team landing on the doorstep of winning a Super Bowl last season, sending the Eagles a first-rounder for Brown can be justified, even if it isn’t ideal.<\/p>\n
