He hasn\u2019t tweeted a single thing about canola. Yet, he\u2019s been able to tweet about International Cat Day. So isn\u2019t that nice?\u201d Mr. Poilievre told reporters in Saskatchewan. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWe need a Prime Minister who will actually stand up for all Canadians, including and especially our prairie producers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/economy\/article-canola-industry-seed-tariff-china\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canola industry asks Ottawa to curtail vegetable-oil imports after China imposes new trade barriers<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">On Tuesday, Beijing announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/economy\/article-canada-canola-agriculture-china-tariffs-anti-dumping\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/economy\/article-canada-canola-agriculture-china-tariffs-anti-dumping\/\">75.8-per-cent duties<\/a> on Canadian canola seed, which followed the imposition of 100-per-cent tariffs on canola oil and meal in March. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The move means all Canadian canola products are effectively barred from China. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Mr. Poilievre accused the Liberal government of not caring about the West, and called for canola producers to be supported in the same way as industries facing U.S. tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The tariffs on canola have been linked to the Liberal government\u2019s decision last year to impose a tariff on Chinese-made electric vehicles and 25-per-cent tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Mr. Poilievre did not directly answer a question about whether the EV tariffs should be removed, but said Canada should use the revenue from the trade dispute to support affected Canadian sectors. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cAnd that, of course, is mostly our canola producers,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/commentary\/article-sovereignty-foreign-aviation-fuel-canola-china\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">You can\u2019t fly sovereignty on foreign fuel<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cSo, it\u2019s time for the federal government to start treating the Prairies and Western Canada with the respect people here deserve. It\u2019s time for a strong voice to stand up for the West.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Mr. Poilievre lost his seat in the April general election and is now running in the Alberta riding of Battle River-Crowfoot. The vote in that by-election is set for Monday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">He was asked Thursday whether he can remain as leader of the party if his share of the vote in that election falls short of the nearly 83 per cent that the Conservative candidate, Damien Kurek, won in the April election. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">He did not directly answer the question. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Mr. Poilievre also faces a leadership review at the party\u2019s national convention in January. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-alberta-by-election-poilievre-electoral-reform-longest-ballot\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alberta by-election where Poilievre is running highlights need for electoral reform, protesters say<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In imposing the canola tariffs, China\u2019s Ministry of Commerce has argued that Canada\u2019s canola sector has benefited from extensive government subsidies and preferential policies that distort markets, and that they launched their own anti-dumping probe. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The federal ministers of trade and agriculture said Canada was \u201cdeeply disappointed\u201d with the Chinese decision. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWe do not dump canola.
