Valley Cardiac Rehabilitation program offers heart health management &#8211; PembinaValleyOnline.com"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nolan Turnbull\u00a0is the kinesiologist on the Morden-Winkler\u00a0My Health\u00a0team.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Among his\u00a0services,\u00a0Turnbull\u00a0works with the Pembina Valley Cardiac Rehabilitation (PVCR) program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">PVCR\u00a0is an education and exercise program designed to support recovery after heart disease, heart surgery, or\u00a0heart\u00a0attack.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">Participants learn skills for long-term heart health through regular supervised exercise, heart-healthy nutrition, medication management, stress management and lifestyle education and counselling.<\/p>\n<p>Milestone reached\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">The program\u00a0is celebrating\u00a05 years of services and its 25th cohort in June.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Each group aims to help 10-12 people recover from a heart event or procedure.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy job\u00a0basically is\u00a0to help with physical activity\u00a0and\u00a0counseling.\u201d\u00a0Turnbull\u00a0explained. \u201cI prescribe exercise to patients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo\u00a0I might do things like,\u00a0if they have chronic pain, give them exercise to help with that.\u00a0Or\u00a0for\u00a0a variety of chronic diseases, diabetes, heart disease, etc., give them exercises or\u00a0come up with\u00a0exercise-related goals,\u00a0to help keep them healthy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Brochures\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"42652d08-0f24-42b6-bcf3-e46a93fd34c4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/My HT Winkler Morden.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>All things heart-related<\/p>\n<p>Those are but a few of the\u00a0heart\u00a0health offerings\u00a0Turnbull provides his\u00a0expertise\u00a0in.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also help with smoking cessation if people want to quit smoking.\u201d\u00a0He\u00a0added. \u201cIf people want to lose weight,\u00a0I\u00a0help\u00a0them manage those types of goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally my job is mostly counseling around physical activity,\u00a0and sometimes\u00a0I&#8217;ll\u00a0give people exercises specifically.\u00a0Then,\u00a0with the cardiac rehab program,\u00a0I help coordinate it.\u00a0I help organize it, help go through the referrals, help\u00a0streamline\u00a0everything, contact the patients, get them enrolled, and then at the actual program I present sometimes, mostly related to physical activity, and then actually\u00a0lead\u00a0the exercise\u00a0portion.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0that\u00a0portion\u00a0of\u00a0Turnbull\u2019s\u00a0job,\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0helping people exercise\u00a0safely,\u00a0overseeing the exercise part of the program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Expertise provides guidance<\/p>\n<p>His training\u00a0guides those core programing decisions for patients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m\u00a0a clinical exercise physiologist technically, and\u00a0so\u00a0my training is to help people exercise safely regardless of their chronic disease or health status.\u201d Turnbull shared.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0PVCR\u00a0Program\u00a0occupies\u00a0a large portion\u00a0of\u00a0his\u00a0day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s\u00a0a program designed to help people after they have heart events or heart procedures.\u201d Turnbull explained.\u00a0Heart attacks, stents, coronary artery bypass grafts, those types of\u00a0things,\u00a0and more.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEssentially\u00a0it\u00a0is a group program where they\u00a0come,\u00a0and we meet at the community\u00a0centre.\u00a0They get some education from a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, pharmacists, dietitians,\u00a0myself, the kinesiologist, shared care counselor, nurse.\u00a0A\u00a0physician even comes, which is really unique.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost programs\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0have a physician involved directly in education, and we do.\u00a0They get a presentation related to their heart health, and then the second part of it\u00a0is\u00a0we do some physical activity together.\u00a0Walking the track, using recumbent bikes or arm ergometers to do some cardio.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Special attention to individual needs<\/p>\n<p>Those activities can be varied.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do some cardio together and then we do some strength all as a group, mostly banded body weight strength, sometimes with light dumbbells.\u201d Turnbull outlined. \u201cWe\u00a0do it as a group and then\u00a0that&#8217;s\u00a0my job is to try and tailor it to each patient as much as possible if they need modifications.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cif\u00a0they&#8217;re\u00a0at different abilities, stuff like that, try and keep it interesting and safe.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The program is celebrating\u00a0an\u00a0anniversary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, it&#8217;s our 5th anniversary.\u201d\u00a0Turnbull\u00a0confirmed. \u201cWe\u00a0started\u00a0June of\u00a02021.\u00a0Our very first cohort was virtual because we were just dealing with COVID restrictions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen things\u00a0opened up\u00a0and we were able to start with some small groups.\u00a0We&#8217;ve\u00a0been going strong ever since.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Nolan Turnbull, Kinesiologist\" data-caption=\"Nolan Turnbull, Kinesiologist\" Kinesiologist<br \/>\nAbout a dozen at a time<\/p>\n<p>Those cohorts average around a dozen people at a time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do five groups a year.\u201d\u00a0Turnbull\u00a0explained.\u00a010 to 12 patients\u00a0is\u00a0the target in each group,\u00a0throughout the year.\u00a0Each group, each session that we do, each session is six weeks long, 12 sessions twice a week we run it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo\u00a0it&#8217;s\u00a0a total of 12 sessions per group and 60 sessions a year if you do, if you combine\u00a0all\u00a0them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Their reach is\u00a0large.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve\u00a0had really good buy-in from the\u00a0C.W.\u00a0Wiebe\u00a0Medical Centre, the Menzies Medical Centre\u00a0working together, Boundary Trails Health Centre\u00a0helping with referrals, and then also support from other programs in the province.\u201d Turnbull shared\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPortage has a program.\u00a0Most of our referrals come from the Reh-Fit Centre\u00a0in Winnipeg.\u00a0They redirect the rural\u00a0referrals out\u00a0accordingly,\u00a0so\u00a0we have partnerships throughout the province that really help us as well.\u00a0The five years have flown by.\u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0went\u00a0really well.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Diversity required<\/p>\n<p>As with anything involving large and diverse groups,\u00a0there&#8217;s\u00a0not\u00a0a\u00a0one-size-fits-all solution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cSometimes we have people as young as\u00a030-year-olds\u00a0who&#8217;ve had heart attacks in the group.\u201d\u00a0Turnbull\u00a0pointed out. \u201cThen you have people as old as 80, 90 sometimes coming through who are still interested in wanting to better their health.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">Those in the group have a host of conditions to work on.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s\u00a0a wide range of cardiac conditions.\u201d\u00a0Turnbull\u00a0noted. \u201cIt can be basic arrhythmias, things like that, or again, stents, coronary artery bypass grafts,\u00a0a\u00a0wide\u00a0range of issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome people are healing\u00a0faster,\u00a0some people are at higher fitness levels than others.\u00a0So\u00a0you\u00a0have to\u00a0try and accommodate all that and make sure everyone has\u00a0a good time\u00a0and\u00a0is able to\u00a0participate\u00a0safely.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gotta stick with it<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to exercise or changes in lifestyle, you might expect\u00a0challenges with having people stick with the program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, we actually do really well.\u201d\u00a0Turnbull\u00a0acknowledged. \u201cTypically, cardiac rehab programs have a 50% dropout rate, so over half the people will drop out of a program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0really see that.\u00a0It has happened in\u00a0the\u00a0odd group or whatever, you know, winters get tough and stuff for people.\u00a0That&#8217;s\u00a0a big barrier to transportation over winter.\u00a0But for the most part, people\u00a0start our program, they finish it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Related stories:<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">Credit for that success rate goes to the partners involved.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think part of that is the fact that we have so many presenters who come in and try and keep it engaging and interesting for the participants.\u201d Turnbull\u00a0suggested.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After\u00a0the\u00a0program\u00a0wraps,\u00a0there\u00a0is\u00a0additional\u00a0follow-up\u00a0for participants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do a follow-up at the end of the program just to check in with myself to see if they want any more exercises or if\u00a0they&#8217;d like any other referrals.\u201d\u00a0Turnbull\u00a0shared.\u00a0Maybe they\u00a0want a referral to a specific team member such as the dietitian for more one-on-one guidance, things like that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut\u00a0the follow-up is optional.\u00a0I do have people\u00a0who&#8217;ve\u00a0been following up with me since the\u00a0start,\u00a0you know, once a year, once every six months who just like that kick in the ****\u00a0for\u00a0some more accountability.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Optional, but advised<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">Continuation is strongly\u00a0advised.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u00a0is optional.\u201d\u00a0Turnbull\u00a0commented. \u201cWe do highly recommend the follow-up.\u00a0There&#8217;s\u00a0so much evidence for if you continue to follow up,\u00a0you&#8217;re\u00a0more likely to stick with your goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see that the people who come to see me,\u00a0some of them do need that kick in the ****\u00a0,\u00a0but a lot of them are actually doing quite well,\u00a0we&#8217;re just having a chat and I&#8217;m keeping them accountable and just having that appointment coming up helps them know, oh yeah, I\u00a0gotta\u00a0keep doing my exercise.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If needed, program remains open<\/p>\n<p>Even\u00a0completing\u00a0follow-up, patients are still able to access the resources in the program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal is that we can keep them active here,\u00a0keep them healthy and\u00a0doing\u00a0all the healthy things so that we\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0have to\u00a0actually see\u00a0them do the program again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can do the program again.\u00a0People are eligible to redo it if they have a new event or new procedure.\u00a0We have had people repeat, but\u00a0for the most part we&#8217;re\u00a0pretty good\u00a0at keeping people\u00a0out\u00a0of the program again. The whole goal is that people have the best quality of life moving forward and hopefully\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0have another heart attack or\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0need another procedure.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">Cardiac patients can get into the program themselves, or through their family doctor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, they can self-refer.\u201d\u00a0Turnbull\u00a0advised. \u201cIt&#8217;s\u00a0always nice to have a little bit more information.\u00a0So\u00a0if people can get a referral from their primary care provider,\u00a0it&#8217;s\u00a0always nice just to get a little bit more background.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0willing to dig and look for the information I need if people want to self-refer.\u00a0We love self-referrals.\u00a0Those people are usually quite motivated and are going to show up.\u00a0If they want, they can just reach out to me directly via my cell or via e-mail, or by contacting\u00a0C.W.\u00a0Wiebe\u00a0Medical Centre\u00a0directly, but physician referrals, other allied health referrals,\u00a0we&#8217;ll\u00a0take them all.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Nolan Turnbull, Kinesiologist\" data-caption=\"Nolan Turnbull, Kinesiologist\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"7a79cf15-ee02-4578-b88c-7590fbe3e1b2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Nolan Turnbull 3.jpg\"\/>Nolan Turnbull, Kinesiologist<\/p>\n<p>The cost\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0program\u00a0is $50.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasically, that\u00a0goes to our room rental.\u201d\u00a0Turnbull\u00a0noted. \u201cIt just helps us go towards the\u00a0room rental\u00a0fee, the classroom that we rent.\u00a0The City of Winkler very generously donates half of the room fee each session, and\u00a0they&#8217;ve\u00a0done that all along for\u00a0all five\u00a0years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo\u00a0we owe a lot to the City of Winkler for continuing to make it low cost and\u00a0feasible\u00a0for as many patients as possible.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The program was a long time coming<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">At five years young, the PVCR took some time to nurture into being.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis program was a long time coming,\u00a0probably decades and decades in the work.\u201d\u00a0Turnbull\u00a0shared.\u00a0There&#8217;s\u00a0been a lot of people over the years who tried to do heart health education.\u00a0and\u00a0identified\u00a0a need.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJim Neufeld, the former clinic manager, did a lot of work to get this going.\u00a0We have the backing of the health care board in the community that does a lot of work for\u00a0us.\u00a0The\u00a0steering committee\u00a0identified\u00a0this as a need and ended up hiring me and getting this program.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">It\u2019s\u00a0not a one-man show by any means\u00a0though.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThis program has been made possible by the\u00a0hard work\u00a0of a lot of people over the years.\u201d Turnbull explained.\u00a0\u201cThere&#8217;s\u00a0still a lot of people who are really involved in it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also\u00a0rely\u00a0on\u00a0a volunteer nurse\u00a0to help us.\u00a0We really, really owe\u00a0Karyn Krahn\u00a0a\u00a0lot.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Find out more<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">To get more information on the program,\u00a0Turnbull pointed\u00a0to\u00a0several options.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can check out the\u00a0C.
