{"id":70123,"date":"2025-08-14T22:43:07","date_gmt":"2025-08-14T22:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/70123\/"},"modified":"2025-08-14T22:43:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T22:43:07","slug":"woman-wins-2025-florida-python-challenge-as-record-number-of-snakes-is-removed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/70123\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman wins 2025 Florida Python Challenge as record number of snakes is removed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-38eaa4\" class=\"body-graf\">Nearly 300 Burmese pythons were removed during a record-setting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcmiami.com\/news\/local\/record-setting-amount-of-snakes-removed-in-2025-florida-python-challenge\/3676921\/?_osource=pa_npd_loc_nat_nbcn_gennbcnews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Florida Python Challenge<\/a> this year, state wildlife officials said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-de0817\" class=\"body-graf\">The 10-day competition that ran from July 11-20 resulted in a record 294 invasive pythons being removed, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5e29df\" class=\"body-graf\">Just 195 pythons were caught during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcmiami.com\/news\/local\/winner-removed-20-burmese-pythons-from-florida-everglades-during-challenge\/3420167\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">last year\u2019s challenge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-064264\" class=\"body-graf\">A total of 934 participants from 30 states and Canada were involved in this year\u2019s hunt which included eight official locations including Everglades National Park.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-17edd8\" class=\"body-graf\">The winner of the $10,000 ultimate grand prize this year was Taylor Stanberry, who removed a whopping 60 pythons.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8c7514\" class=\"body-graf\">Stanberry promotes herself as a \u201cvenomous keeper\u201d and \u201cvenomous relocator\u201d from Naples on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/taylor2short\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">her Instagram page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4450dc\" class=\"body-graf\">The rest of the approximate $15,000 in prizes was divided among competitors in the contest\u2019s three categories: novice, professional and military.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-558649\" class=\"body-graf\">Donna Kalil, who last year caught 19 pythons in the professional category, captured 56 this year.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6b4cc6\" class=\"body-graf\">The most pythons caught by a novice were 14 by Krista Hoekstra, while John Southworth led the military category with 5.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-edaaf9\" class=\"body-graf\">The longest python caught this year was 15 feet, 11 inches by a novice, Michael Marousky. The longest caught in the military category was 11 feet, 2 inches by Jonathan Miller, while the longest caught by a professional was 9 feet, 8 inches by Kennith Chamberland.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-04cec7\" class=\"body-graf\">Burmese pythons are one of the state\u2019s most notorious invasive species, and the FWC has implemented several efforts to remove the large nonvenomous constrictors from our ecosystem \u2014 primarily by humanely killing them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a1c322\" class=\"body-graf\">To incentivize their removal, Florida hosts the annual python challenges.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0510ed\" class=\"body-graf\">More than 23,500 pythons were removed from natural areas in the state of Florida between 2000 and April 2025, according to the FWC.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-813c5d\" class=\"body-graf\">The amount of pythons captured and removed increased drastically once the paid challenge was launched in 2017.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-413749\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">\u201cThe record number of invasive pythons removed from the Everglades during this year\u2019s competition is a big win for native wildlife.
