{"id":701638,"date":"2026-05-29T13:40:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T13:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/701638\/"},"modified":"2026-05-29T13:40:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T13:40:08","slug":"chen-sicheng-comedy-being-towards-death-lands-u-k-distribution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/701638\/","title":{"rendered":"Chen Sicheng Comedy &#8216;Being Towards Death&#8217; Lands U.K. Distribution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/trinity-cineasia\/\" id=\"auto-tag_trinity-cineasia\" data-tag=\"trinity-cineasia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trinity CineAsia<\/a> has acquired U.K. distribution rights to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/being-towards-death\/\" id=\"auto-tag_being-towards-death\" data-tag=\"being-towards-death\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Being Towards Death<\/a>,\u201d the latest feature from \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/detective-chinatown\/\" id=\"auto-tag_detective-chinatown\" data-tag=\"detective-chinatown\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Detective Chinatown<\/a>\u201d franchise director <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/chen-sicheng\/\" id=\"auto-tag_chen-sicheng\" data-tag=\"chen-sicheng\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chen Sicheng<\/a> and one of mainland China\u2019s first palliative comedies, with the film set to open at selected Odeon venues on June 5.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRights were obtained from Blossoms Entertainment. The film screened in main competition at the Beijing International Film Festival before opening in mainland China on May 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA marked shift for Chen \u2013 known primarily for commercial suspense-thriller work across the \u201cDetective Chinatown\u201d series and titles including \u201cLost in the Stars\u201d and \u201cSheep Without a Shepherd\u201d \u2013 the Mandarin-language feature is also his first foray into comedy-drama. The film follows Xiaobing, a debt-ridden man who, after losing his family and surviving a suicide attempt, takes a job providing mental support to patients in Cancer Ward No. 10. His transactional arrangement gradually shifts as he is pulled into his patients\u2019 final wishes and impulsive adventures, culminating in a road trip aboard a repurposed ambulance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe ensemble cast is led by Jiang Long, Qi Xi and Yang Chaoyue \u2013 a veteran of the Rocket Girls 101 talent competition \u2013 alongside Wang Zichuan, Zhang Chi, Cao Bingkun, Huang Yi and Ye Quanxi. Veteran actor Ni Dahong and comedy performer Cai Ming appear in special roles, and Sixth Generation directors Jia Zhangke and Guan Hu make cameo appearances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cHaving worked multiple times with Chen Sicheng, we followed his evolution from tentpole comedy franchise to more intimate dramas, damn clever remakes to outright thrillers verging on horror. Chen is widely seen as one of the most versatile writer-directors working in China today, and of course one of its most successful producers.
