{"id":702192,"date":"2026-05-29T19:22:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T19:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/702192\/"},"modified":"2026-05-29T19:22:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T19:22:11","slug":"foothills-county-reminds-cyclists-to-follow-rules-of-the-road-highriveronline-com","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/702192\/","title":{"rendered":"Foothills County reminds cyclists to follow rules of the road &#8211; HighRiverOnline.com"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foothillscountyab.ca\/emergency-services\/foothills-enforcement-services\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Foothills County Enforcement Services<\/a> reminds\u00a0cyclists\u00a0to know and follow\u00a0the rules of the\u00a0road.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCyclists are a legal and recognized road user in Foothills County,\u201d enforcement shared in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1Cow2UAtBj\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook post<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cRiding on rural roads comes with\u00a0responsibilities\u00a0to keep yourself and others safe.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The county said cyclists must follow all\u00a0rules\u00a0of the road, including signs and signals.\u00a0Cyclists should\u00a0ride as close to the right side of the roadway as\u00a0practicable\u00a0when safe, ride\u00a0single\u00a0file, and behave predictably.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Related Stories:<\/p>\n<p>Cyclists should also use all required safety equipment, including lights when riding in low light, and wear an approved helmet if under 18, although helmets are strongly recommended for all riders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCyclists are subject to traffic laws and enforcement, just like motorists,\u201d said the county. \u201cRiding responsibly helps reduce collisions and keeps rural roads safe for everyone.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For parking and stopping, the county said cyclists should not stop or park bicycles on travel lanes, narrow shoulders, ditches, or field access points.\u00a0Cyclists\u00a0should\u00a0also avoid stopping where sightlines are\u00a0limited\u00a0or\u00a0where\u00a0farm\u00a0equipment may enter the roadway. Improper stopping may\u00a0result\u00a0in enforcement action.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fines\u00a0for cyclists\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the Traffic Safety Act, bicycles are considered vehicles under Alberta law, meaning cyclists must obey all traffic laws applicable to motor vehicles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Section 11 states cyclists must use proper hand signals when turning or\u00a0stopping,\u00a0and Section 113 states\u00a0night riding requires a front light, a rear red light, and a rear red reflector and brakes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alberta.ca\/errors\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Government of Alberta<\/a> lists the following penalties and fines for cyclists:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Both feet on pedals, both\u00a0hands on\u00a0handlebars, carrying passenger (without passenger seat), $81\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The provincial government adds that only pedestrians have the right of way in crosswalks.
