<\/p>\nIt was supposed to be a fun February outing for Calgarian Krisztian Riez \u2014 a quick day trip across the border to Montana to pick up up a friend, grab a bite to eat, and then head back home to Alberta.<\/p>\n

His friend\u2019s daughter (who is also his goddaughter) was supposed to join them, too,\u00a0 but ended up being too sick with the flu to travel.<\/p>\n
To make the trip more comfortable, Riez decided to rent a minivan through Turo<\/a>,a peer-to-peer rental company that uses the advertising slogan, \u201cskip the rental car counter.\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s a company Riez said he\u2019s rented from before \u2014 about a half dozen times.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\tKrisztian Riez says he rented from Turo about a half dozen times before his latest experience with the company landed him in trouble at the Canada-U.S. border.\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\tTuro.com\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n All went as planned until they arrived back at the international border and officers with the Canadian Border Services Agency, pulled them aside for some secondary screening.<\/p>\n Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n \u201cThere was a big shed or something, a screening area. I was like, cool, nothing to hide, go for it,\u201d said Riez.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen they screened it, they said step outside, a list of questions \u2014 I listened, I followed, and then they\u2019re like, \u2018fentanyl hit.’\u201d<\/p>\n Riez was in shock.<\/p>\n \n\t\t\tMore on Crime \u201cThey\u2019re like yeah, you got a hit for fentanyl on the steering wheel and on the back of the seat, now you\u2019re detained, and one of the border officers was like, \u2018We\u2019re gonna find it on you,\u2019 and then the other one was going through my phone, going through his (friend\u2019s) phone, going through my business, going through the car.\u00a0 (They) had the dog go through, they scanned every piece of luggage through, they ripped the inside of it out as well,\u201d said Riez.<\/p>\n \u201cI was like, what is happening? The whole world is flipping out right now. (I) never touch drugs.\u201d And his friend, said Riez, doesn\u2019t drink and doesn\u2019t smoke.<\/p>\n \u201cThe (CBSA) officer told me. \u2018You\u2019re lucky your goddaughter didn\u2019t come because she had the flu.\u2019\u00a0 And I was like, \u2018Why is that?\u2019\u00a0 He goes, well, \u2018Possibly she\u2019d be dead.’\u201d<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n Get the day’s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n The officer told Riez they found traces of fentanyl on the steering wheel and on the back of the seat \u2014 right where his friend\u2019s daughter would\u2019ve been sitting. That revelation, said Riez, was scary.<\/p>\n Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n \u201cAs you know, kids like to play with their hands, and so she would have been in the back, right behind me. The likelihood of her touching her hands on the seat was high, and I was driving for how many hours, and I had no clue.\u201d<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\tRiez told Global News that CBSA officers claimed they found traces of fentanyl in the minivan that he rented from Turo.\u00a0 He and a friend were detained for several hours.\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\tGlobal News\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n After several hours of questioning, Riez and his friend were released.<\/p>\n \u201cThey were going, \u2018It\u2019s not you\u2019\u00a0 \u2014 clearly it\u2019s not me \u2014 \u2018but you know what we need to do.\u2019\u00a0 They let us go, didn\u2019t detain us, didn\u2019t seize the car. They said it was the one (minivan user) prior that was possibly having fentanyl on them.\u201d<\/p>\n When Riez got back to Calgary, he contacted Turo.<\/p>\n \u201cThey said \u2018We need CBSA documentation,’\u201d said Riez.\u00a0 \u201cI said, that takes 30 days and they said, it didn\u2019t exist then.\u00a0 So I said \u2018OK, well here\u2019s a notarized affidavit.\u2019 I got a passenger notarized affidavit, meaning I could go to jail for fake statements \u2014 but they kept denying it,\u201d added Riez.<\/p>\n Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n Eventually, after going back and forth with them three or four times they promised to look into the matter and Riez said they told him they\u2019d restrict the vehicle from being rented.<\/p>\n \n\t\tRelated News\n\t<\/p>\n
