CARLSBAD, Calif. – No. 14 Pepperdine men’s golf couldn’t have asked for a much better beginning at the NCAA Championships on Friday, sitting in third place (three-under) following the opening round.

\nThe Waves were one of just nine teams out of 30 to shoot under par to begin stroke play. Despite a sunny and nearly completely clear sky, all squads had to battle a brisk breeze and often moderate gusts. No. 30 UCLA paced the leaderboard at eight-under on the day, while San Diego’s Ian Maspat guided all individuals at six-under.<\/p>\n

\nCarson Kim<\/a> and Mahanth Chirravuri<\/a> started the Waves off on the right foot, with each shooting two-under. Kim fired four birdies, working around a pair of bogeys on four and seven. \nChirravuri tallied a birdie each on the front and back nine and stayed bogey-free, carding a 70 in the opening round.

\nBrady Siravo<\/a> balanced out a couple of bogeys down the stretch with a pair of birdies, scoring an even round. He planted a beautiful shot on hole nine before sinking his shot for par to conclude his round.

\nWilly Walsh<\/a> was at two-under entering the final five but was tripped up with four bogeys down the stretch, and he finished one-over in the first round.

\n Byungho Lee<\/a> rounded out head coach Michael Beard<\/a>‘s lineup with a four-over performance. The sophomore was consistent throughout the day, but double-bogeys on 15 and 17 ultimately made the difference.
