They got us wrong."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Listen to article \u2022\u00a00:00 min<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">A little less than two months ago, Inquirer columnist Will Bunch wrote a piece entitled &#8220;<a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/opinion\/world-cup-prices-visa-trump-20260416.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/opinion\/world-cup-prices-visa-trump-20260416.html\">A <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/world-cup\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World Cup<\/a> in Trump\u2019s America is insane. How this fan is coping<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In it, Bunch opined about what he labeled as corrupt capitalism (referring to ticket gouging) and unrestrained xenophobia (see Trump travel bans), the likes of which haven\u2019t been seen. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">He delivered it through the lens of Philadelphian \u2014 by way of C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire \u2014 Bouakart Coulibaly, a devout fan of Les Elephants, the West African nation that will play two matches in Philly in a few short weeks. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\">\u00bb READ MORE: <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/fifa-world-cup-philadelphia-host-committee-human-rights-homelessness-20260529.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\">Philadelphia FIFA World Cup committee releases a \u2018thin\u2019 human rights plan two weeks before first game<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Despite his love for both soccer and his country, Coulibaly couldn\u2019t consider paying $833 for nosebleed seats to one of their matches, offering yet another example of the unbridled greed FIFA has displayed in bringing its biggest spectacle to North America. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">At the time of Bunch\u2019s piece, price gouging was one of the few, but eye-opening things that stood to ruin the excitement of the World Cup. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">With FIFA for the first time enacting a page from the playbook of American sports, electing to introduce dynamic pricing to its ticket sales, it\u2019s fair to say they believed that historically high demand would rake in millions from the wallets of not only the 1%, but that of hard-working, soccer-loving Americans, in a country rife with immigrants and expatriates. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Here we are now two weeks out from what\u2019s supposed to be the start of the biggest World Cup ever, when 48 nations, not the customary 32, battle to be inside MetLife Stadium, the site of the World Cup final on July 19. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\">\u00bb READ MORE: <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/soccer\/breaking-down-usmnts-2026-world-cup-roster-all-its-philly-ties-20260527.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\">Watch: Breaking down the U.S. World Cup roster and all of its local ties<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">But instead of excitement, this lead-up feels almost trite, given FIFA has simply found a new way to veil  making as much cash as humanly possible, alienating its mission of making the game \u201c<a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fifa.com\/en\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.fifa.com\/en\/home\">For the World<\/a>,\u201d as its corporate slogan suggests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The goal might be the same for these nations, many of whom are arriving with the world\u2019s best players in tow, but the backdrop just feels different. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Welcome, soccer fans, to the American bastardization of \u201cThe Beautiful Game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">New York and New Jersey officials are investigating whether FIFA\u2019s World Cup ticketing practices violated consumer protection laws after fans complained about soaring prices, variable pricing models and seat relocations. <a data-link-type=\"article-body\" class=\"text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1T8RdPG8if\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/1T8RdPG8if<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Associated Press (@AP) <a data-link-type=\"article-body\" class=\"text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AP\/status\/2060112088136040788?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">May 28, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Tickets are their own problem, one so severe that two attorneys general are <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/nation-world\/attorney-general-davenport-james-fifa-investigation-ticket-prices-20260527.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/nation-world\/attorney-general-davenport-james-fifa-investigation-ticket-prices-20260527.html\">investigating FIFA for unfair practices<\/a>. But look at the game. For the first time, there will be opportunities for sponsors to run ads masked behind a pause in the action for \u201chydration breaks,\u201d cooling periods due to anticipated high summer heat scheduled to<a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/story\/_\/id\/48111478\/fifa-gives-green-light-adverts-shown-world-cup-water-breaks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/story\/_\/id\/48111478\/fifa-gives-green-light-adverts-shown-world-cup-water-breaks\"> last up to three minutes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Which, if you\u2019re in the advertising or broadcasting world, you know that\u2019s just enough time to pedal fast food, alcohol, hardware supplies, financial services, and more to millions watching on television. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">All of those sectors, coincidentally, happen to be some of <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fifa.com\/en\/tournaments\/mens\/worldcup\/canadamexicousa2026\/organisation\/areas-in-focus\/commercial-partnerships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.fifa.com\/en\/tournaments\/mens\/worldcup\/canadamexicousa2026\/organisation\/areas-in-focus\/commercial-partnerships\">FIFA\u2019s largest sponsors<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Soccer, or football for the purists, was the last bastion of sport where one could watch a match completely uninterrupted and not have to reset their brain back to the action after turning down the TV because the ads were pumped in louder than the game itself. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\">\u00bb READ MORE: <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/philadelphia\/road-closures-lemon-hill-fifa-fan-festival-world-cup-20260526.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\">Roads are closed for the FIFA Fan Festival. Here\u2019s what to know.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Now, that\u2019s gone. FIFA literally took a page from the American sports landscape for a game that attracts a majority of non-Americans. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Even more preposterous? Remember that final on July 19 mentioned earlier? For the first time in the 96-year history of the World Cup, it will have a Super Bowl-style halftime show attached to it, featuring Madonna, Shakira and South Korean boy band, BTS, as the headliners. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Now, for those who read this and say, \u201cSo what, it\u2019s just like any other sport, who cares?\u201d I\u2019ll tell you who cares. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Europeans care. Africans care. Asians care. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">All people who aren\u2019t predominantly locked in to the NBA finals, the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/world-series\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World Series<\/a>, or the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/super-bowl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Super Bowl<\/a>, en masse. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Don\u2019t believe me? Check out the Nielsen ratings for any of the previous World Cup finals and then compare them to any Super Bowl in the last 12 years (the last three World Cup cycles) and <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsvideo.org\/2023\/01\/06\/ratings-roundup-2022-fifa-world-cup-final-with-over-16-7-million-viewers-most-watched-mens-world-cup-in-english-language-tv-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsvideo.org\/2023\/01\/06\/ratings-roundup-2022-fifa-world-cup-final-with-over-16-7-million-viewers-most-watched-mens-world-cup-in-english-language-tv-history\/\">you\u2019ll see what I mean<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The 2022 version of the World Cup was the most-watched men\u2019s World Cup in history, with nearly 5 billion viewers across all platforms, according to a <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rd.com\/article\/everyones-talking-about-the-world-cup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.rd.com\/article\/everyones-talking-about-the-world-cup\/\">recent report in Reader\u2019s Digest<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Instead, anyone watching or attending games in person will be subjected to watching Madonna, Shakira, and BTS deliver a halftime show, one that keeps players gunning for the world\u2019s largest sporting prize sequestered in locker rooms longer than usual for our supposed viewing pleasure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">It\u2019s so preposterous that the British Broadcasting Company, a <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2024\/12\/17\/bbc-itv-world-cup-broadcast-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2024\/12\/17\/bbc-itv-world-cup-broadcast-rights\/\">$200 million paying co-rights holder<\/a> for the tournament, already came out and announced plans not to air FIFA\u2019s halftime spectacle <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gbnews.com\/sport\/football\/bbc-itv-world-cup-half-time-show\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.gbnews.com\/sport\/football\/bbc-itv-world-cup-half-time-show\">during its broadcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The World Cup is for the Americas. But it\u2019s also for the other continents with people who grew up watching soccer the way it\u2019s supposed to look. Many of the nations within those continents, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/articles\/guide-countries-trumps-travel-ban-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/articles\/guide-countries-trumps-travel-ban-list\">75 to be exact<\/a>, are either banned or under severe guidelines to enter the United States to see the game live due to travel restrictions <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/irtable.com\/app9TykR4ZgKeO8yt\/tblnehnDJ12d9RDWU\/viwfShbbE09ENqqHR?blocks=hide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/irtable.com\/app9TykR4ZgKeO8yt\/tblnehnDJ12d9RDWU\/viwfShbbE09ENqqHR?blocks=hide\">levied by the Trump Administration<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\">\u00bb READ MORE: <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/soccer\/us-soccer-roster-reveal-pulisic-mckenzie-world-cup-nyc-20260527.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\">Why it\u2019s OK that we didn\u2019t learn much from the U.S. World Cup roster reveal<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">You\u2019d think with that knowledge, FIFA would show some goodwill and keep its matches looking the way they\u2019re supposed to. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">And for the soccer fans and American sports traditionalists who don\u2019t care about what supporters from other countries think about it because you don\u2019t live there or it doesn\u2019t affect you, or worse, because this is what you\u2019ve always been used to, well, perhaps you just proved why FIFA has been allowed to get away with so much of it. <\/p>\n<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Inquirer logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/circle_outline_footer_light_theme.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        The World Cup in Philly<\/p>\n<p>Nine nations will compete in five group stage matches this summer, plus two more in a knockout game on July 4.
