{"id":705552,"date":"2026-05-31T09:39:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-31T09:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/705552\/"},"modified":"2026-05-31T09:39:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-31T09:39:12","slug":"mclaren-make-brutal-admission-over-oscar-piastri-f1-canadian-gp-penalty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/705552\/","title":{"rendered":"McLaren make brutal admission over Oscar Piastri F1 Canadian GP penalty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McLaren has made a brutal admission over the 10-second time penalty awarded to Oscar Piastri at the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportweek.com\/series\/single-seater\/formula-1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Formula 1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/racing\/2026\/canada\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Grand Prix. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Piastri and McLaren\u2019s race unravelled on the opening lap of the F1 Canadian GP, forced to pit after a disastrous decision to start the race on slick tyres backfired.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dropped into the clutches of the midfield, he and teammate Norris were forced to battle their way back up the order, but Piastri would struggle to make progress. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His race woes were compounded shortly afterwards, as he misjudged his braking into the hairpin, careering into the sidepod of Alex Albon\u2019s Williams. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Piastri was able to continue, Albon retired on the spot, the internals of his FW48 exposed and steaming away as a result of the incident. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stewards took a dim view of Piastri\u2019s actions, awarding the Australian a 10-second time penalty that all but killed his chances of points. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Team Principal Andrea Stella confirmed that he agreed with their decision. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn terms of Oscar\u2019s incident, the stewards penalised the incident and this is deserved,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s much more to add.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Oscar-Piastri-Alex-Albon-1024x576.webp\" alt=\"Oscar Piastri and Alex Albon collided in the F1 Canadian GP\" class=\"wp-image-247039\"  \/>Oscar Piastri and Alex Albon collided in the F1 Canadian GP<\/p>\n<p>Oscar Piastri incident labelled \u2018a misjudgement\u2019 <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stella, reflecting on a tough afternoon for McLaren in Montreal, admitted points were a possibility prior to the crash that he called a \u201cmisjudgement\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was a misjudgement. Obviously there must have been some pressure as well to try and recover, but ultimately, this was penalised by the stewards and was also penalised by the fact that the car was damaged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn hindsight, definitely the points would have been possible, but we didn\u2019t have a pace that could have allowed us to recover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[Franco] Colapinto [who finished sixth], I\u2019m not sure that was possible in terms of catching up after the issues we had at the start.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe car was damaged, so Oscar lost some performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McLaren\u2019s race in Montreal was over before the lights went out, its decision to start on intermediate tyres perplexing many.
