People across South Korea set their alarms for 3 am, laced up their walking shoes, and stepped out before dawn as communities in four cities came together for a mental health awareness event known as \u2018SOLAS\u2019, organised by the Irish Association of Korea (IAK).<\/p>\n

The overnight events saw participants gather in the darkness at 4.30 am before setting off on walks designed to raise awareness of mental health issues, encourage open conversations, and show support for those struggling.<\/p>\n

Organised by the Irish Association of Korea, with support from the Irish Embassy in Seoul, and local volunteers, the walks took place in Seoul, Busan, Jeju Island, and Jeonju, bringing together Irish expats, Korean families, students, and supporters united by a common message of hope.<\/p>\n

As the first light of day appeared, walkers completed the symbolic journey from darkness to light, reflecting the event\u2019s aim to highlight the importance of mental well-being and suicide prevention.<\/p>\n

Participants wore bright green t-shirts as they made their way through city streets and parks, with organisers describing the atmosphere as both emotional and uplifting.<\/p>\n

The walk was led by Gordon Winthrop and Warren Neiland, Wellbeing Officer for the IAK, and saw hundreds of people gather together for another successful event across four major cities.<\/p>\n

Irish Association of Korea<\/a> Chairman Alan Leavy said the continued growth of \u2018SOLAS\u2019 reflects the strong sense of community support surrounding mental health awareness initiatives in Korea\u2019s Irish and International communities.<\/p>\n

Public Relations Officer of the IAK, Victor Flood, explained that all proceeds from the SOLAS 2026 walk will support the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God, which provides a wide range of services, including healthcare, mental health support, addiction treatment, hospice care, and residential support services for people with learning difficulties.<\/p>\n

The SOLAS movement has continued to grow in South Korea in recent years, inspired by the Irish Association of Korea, and has become one of Asia\u2019s best-known mental health awareness events.<\/p>\n

Organisers said the walks were about more than just raising funds, with the events providing an opportunity for people to come together, support one another, and help break the stigma that can still surround mental health issues.<\/p>\n

Secretary of the Irish Association of Korea, Jessie Shiels said \u2018 We\u2019re delighted with this year\u2019s turnout, and especially excited to welcome Jeonju as our fourth host city. Seeing communities across Korea come together in support of such a worthwhile cause has been truly inspiring.\u2019<\/p>\n

As dawn broke across South Korea, the message from participants was clear: nobody should have to face their darkest moments alone.<\/p>\n
