There’s been talk of a summer State of Play<\/a> for a good while, and luckily, Sony put an end to the speculation with the official announcement<\/a>. It’s heading our way in just a few days, on 2nd June 2026, and it seems like a biggie.<\/p>\n

With a runtime of more than an hour, confirmation that Marvel’s Wolverine<\/a> will be kicking things off, and Sony even showing screenings in select US theatres, there’s a lot of buzz around this presentation.<\/p>\n

We don’t really have any information to go on, but what kind of PlayStation site would we be if we didn’t make some State of Play predictions?<\/p>\n

Below, we’ve cobbled together a few things we reckon are plausible to happen at the upcoming show.<\/p>\n

\"17<\/a>
\nMarvel’s Wolverine looks reliably excellent<\/p>\n

It’s Insomniac; when was the last time it made a bad game? A new look at Marvel’s Wolverine<\/a> is the single confirmed game for State of Play, so we’ll get our thoughts regarding it out of the way first. The developer has landed on a winning superhero formula after three Spider-Man<\/a> games, and we don’t expect it to stray too far from that for Logan’s story.<\/p>\n

Expect this to be an impressive, yet fairly safe and reliable showing from Insomniac. It doesn’t push the boat out too much, but what it knows best is always of a high quality.<\/p>\n

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet gives a glimpse at gameplay<\/p>\n

Announced<\/a> at The Game Awards 2024, it’s been a long time since we’ve seen Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet<\/a>, the next game from Naughty Dog. Obviously, Sony still has Marvel’s Wolverine and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls<\/a> to come this year (more on the latter below), but is it perhaps time to see what’s to come in 2027 and beyond? We’re dying to see some proper gameplay of this thing, and we reckon a fresh trailer isn’t out of the question.<\/p>\n

More Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls characters enter the arena<\/p>\n

Marvel Tokon is due out on 9th August, so it’s coming up pretty soon. There are still six more characters in its launch roster yet to be revealed, and we reckon it’s almost guaranteed we’ll see a new team unveiled during State of Play. We know that Doctor Doom and Ghost Rider are heading up their respective teams, and it seems likely we’ll see one of those remaining quartets revealed.<\/p>\n

\nWhat’s the story, Cory?<\/p>\n

By all accounts, we\u2019ll be playing a new mythology-hopping God of War<\/a> game starring Kratos\u2019 late wife Faye this time next year. The title, directed by Santa Monica Studio icon Cory Barlog, is said to look and feel like a new IP, so we\u2019re predicting another reinvention for the long-running franchise, after the excellent Ragnarok<\/a>. It feels like the right time to start teasing this title, if it\u2019s due out in 2027.<\/p>\n

Break in Break In gently<\/p>\n

Sony read the room with Horizon Hunters Gathering\u2019s<\/a> reveal, but it hasn\u2019t exactly improved public sentiment. It may need to just rip off the bandaid with Break In<\/a>, the expected rename<\/a> of live service shooter Fairgames<\/a>. One way it could make this announcement land is if it\u2019s available to play immediately \u2013 a shadow drop. A prolonged promo cycle doesn\u2019t feel like it\u2019s going to work here.<\/p>\n

Is it Media Molecule’s time?<\/p>\n

Media Molecule is in a very interesting spot; after releasing the brilliant but underperforming Dreams<\/a> in 2020, it officially ended live support in 2023, meaning it’s been working on its next game since at least that point. Is that a big enough stretch of time to get a sneak peek of what it’s got cooking? We sure hope so. All we know so far is that it’s a new IP and a more traditional game, and word on the street is it’s open world<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\nIt can only be Onimusha<\/p>\n

We’ve been waiting on a release date for Onimusha: Way of the Sword<\/a> for what feels like an eternity \u2014 and the craziest part is that Capcom heavily alluded to some kind of announcement last month, but it never materialised. This State of Play seems like a fairly solid bet, then, and we’ll hopefully be given another highly promising look at the anticipated action title in the process.<\/p>\n

The Silent Hill streak continues in Townfall<\/p>\n

Konami keeps on getting Silent Hill<\/a> right, and that’s expected to continue in a more indie take on the series. Silent Hill: Townfall<\/a> is slated for a PS5 release this year, and Sony has backed it previously in the last State of Play. Let’s get a final release date for this potential cracker.<\/p>\n

There are a Lara games to look forward to<\/p>\n

It\u2019s just as likely at Summer Game Fest or even the Xbox Showcase, but we\u2019ll surely see more of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis<\/a> at some point soon. The remake is officially due out later this year, and with GTA 6<\/a> consuming everything in November, a release date for Lara Croft\u2019s long-awaited return has to be imminent. PlayStation will forever be intrinsically linked to this series, so don\u2019t be surprised if Sony has marketing.<\/p>\n

\nFinally time for Final Fantasy 7’s conclusion?<\/p>\n

Since its very public switch to multiformat development, it doesn\u2019t feel like Square Enix wants to associate Final Fantasy 7<\/a> with PS5 anymore. For that reason, it\u2019d be a surprise to see the remake trilogy\u2019s third and final part announced during a State of Play. That said, the franchise\u2019s fanbase is very much still on PlayStation, and it feels like the publisher is ready to show something soon. It just depends whether the Japanese company wants that venue to be a PS5-focused broadcast or not.<\/p>\n

Phantom Blade Zero drops a PS5 demo<\/p>\n

Phantom Blade Zero<\/a> is quietly creeping up on its September 2026 release date, yet we haven’t actually seen the game in quite some time. As we approach summer, it’ll want to get itself in front of the most eyes possible. A great way to do that is with a demo, confirmed during the State of Play that’s made available right after the show airs.<\/p>\n

The making of a Monster (Hunter)<\/p>\n

Capcom loves a State of Play announcement, and while we have no doubt that the publisher will hold the full gameplay reveal of Monster Hunter Wilds’<\/a> expansion back for its own show later down the line, we could totally see the DLC getting some kind of teaser here. More to see at Summer Game Fest, perhaps?<\/p>\n

Forza Horizon 6 must be on the horizon<\/p>\n

At a time when Microsoft is debating exclusivity, expecting Forza Horizon 6<\/a> to show up during a State of Play seems ludicrous, doesn\u2019t it? But under its old leadership, the Redmond firm has dated games during Sony\u2019s showcases before. And given the sales of Forza Horizon 5<\/a> on PS5, it wouldn\u2019t be a massive surprise to see Microsoft date its Japan-based racer on the biggest stage.<\/p>\n

\nThe Streets won’t stop Fighting<\/p>\n

Sony has worked overtime to ensure its console is closely aligned with the fighting game community, and while Street Fighter 6\u2019s<\/a> fourth season will likely be revealed at another event, like Summer Game Fest, it wouldn\u2019t be hugely surprising to see it at State of Play either. Is Final Fantasy 7\u2019s<\/a> Tifa going to be part of the roster? All will be revealed this summer, either way.<\/p>\n

PS Portal OLED is announced<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been long rumoured, but the State of Play could be the right time for PlayStation to unveil the OLED version of the PS Portal. With price rises questioning the validity of handhelds like the Steam Deck, the Portal is increasingly becoming a decent entry-level device. Although we\u2019re unsure whether the bump in price an OLED screen would bring to the Portal would be worth it, things like fast-charging and possibly higher refresh rates could sweeten the deal a little.<\/p>\n

PS Plus hints are a new staple<\/p>\n

Sony always tends to tease a few PS Plus<\/a> perks during each State of Play, and we doubt June\u2019s livestream will be any different. Expect one or two major titles poised to hit the service at some point over the summer, as well as some PS Plus Premium<\/a> hints as well. With the price recently raised and Days of Play<\/a> underway, the manufacturer will want to lock in a few subscriptions.<\/p>\n

We can get through 4Loop together<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t care, you don\u2019t care \u2013 but look, it\u2019s probably going to be there. Sony\u2019s invested big in Bad Robot Games\u2019 4Loop<\/a>, and it\u2019s going to make damn sure it takes the opportunity to show it to you. Without wanting to end this article on a low note, let\u2019s hope the game is starting to take shape, as it\u2019s really underwhelmed in past showings. To be honest, much like Fairgames, it\u2019s unclear whether State of Play is the right venue for this type of title, but it is what it is.<\/p>\n
