\n\tRival WNBA<\/a> fans<\/a> have had some common ground this season. Within their Reddit community, more than 100 fans have discussed the league\u2019s updated app<\/a>, tallying faults like being logged out repeatedly and game streams jumping back to the beginning or to live instead of skipping a few seconds in either direction.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe app is genuinely making it impossible to watch and enjoy games,\u201d\u00a0one fan wrote last week. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m ready to cancel,\u201d another opined.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAndroid users appeared to be particularly impacted. The WNBA app\u2019s rating on Google\u2019s platform dropped from 4.54 out of 5 on April 25 to 2.71 as of May 22, according to data from digital intelligence platform Similarweb. During that time, the percentage of 1-star reviews grew from 4% to 42%.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe complaints came after the W made \u201csome of the most significant enhancements to the WNBA App and digital platforms in league history,\u201d WNBA head of digital Dev Ward said in a statement given to\u00a0Sportico. Ward also acknowledged the challenges users have faced early on.\u00a0Most of the issues fans have cited have been resolved, according to a person familiar with the app\u2019s recent updates.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAs with any major platform evolution, we\u2019ve heard that some users have experienced bugs or performance issues,\u201d Ward said. \u201cOur teams are constantly identifying, prioritizing and resolving those issues in real time. Fan feedback is extremely important to us as we continue improving the experience and building digital products that bring fans closer to the game, teams and players than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe WNBA has invested in its digital platforms since raising $75 million in 2022, hiring Ward from Disney to lead product development and partnering with consulting firm Deloitte, also a major league sponsor, to help build a new offering from the ground up. By 2023, there were about a dozen staffers working on league apps. Overall, the league\u2019s front office roughly\u00a0doubled<\/a>\u00a0its full-time staffing following the cash injection. The W owns product strategy responsibilities while engineering and support roles are handled with help from external partners, including ongoing assistance from Deloitte and the NBA.<\/p>\n

\n\tFrom 2023 through September 2025, app downloads\u00a0grew<\/a>\u00a0by 119%, and League Pass subscriptions in the app\u2014which come with streaming<\/a> access to out-of-market games\u2014rose 491%, according to research published by Deloitte. The WNBA\u2019s expansion has increased the stakes for its digital products and the expectations<\/a> fans have, as well as the league\u2019s opportunity to capitalize.<\/p>\n

\n\tNew this year is an account system that unifies the experience across\u00a0WNBA.com\u00a0and mobile platforms, offering personalized content based on fan preferences, and the ability to switch between home and away broadcast feeds. More than 1.2 million accounts have set up a WNBA ID thus far. App performance and stability is among the group\u2019s current areas of focus.\u00a0Within the Google Play store, the league is also responding to users reporting issues.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe W app is not yet as widely distributed as the NBA\u2019s. The WNBA version is currently available on four types of connected devices\u2014Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Android TV (which has been added since last season)\u2014while the NBA\u2019s now lives across seven platforms, as well as gaming consoles and Meta Quest VR headsets, according to its website.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThis year, WNBA League Pass is $40 (or $15\/month), up from $35 the two previous seasons and $25 the two years before that.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tUnder the league\u2019s new media deals, 216 games are airing nationally, including all 44 Indiana Fever contests, leaving more than 100 games on League Pass.\u00a0That number varies slightly based on location; games airing locally generally aren\u2019t available on League Pass. As of this year, nationally televised games are available for replay the following morning, while other replays become watchable after a given contest\u2019s conclusion.<\/p>\n

\n\tThis year, League Pass is no longer available through YouTube or YouTube TV, though fans can buy the package from Amazon Prime Video. The rules for when games can be watched from the beginning on Prime differ depending on whether the game is exclusive to Prime, airing on another national broadcaster, or only being carried locally and on League Pass\u2014as one 20-plus-comment Reddit discussion\u00a0detailed<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tUnderstandably, the league\u2019s rapid evolution has left some fans\u00a0confused<\/a>\u00a0about what games they have access to, when, and through which platforms. <\/p>\n

\n\tMonday\u2019s games are on USA and Peacock. Tuesday brings four League Pass contests, followed by USA, Prime Video, Ion, ABC, CBS and NBA TV telecasts later this week. Checking the streaming schedule\u2014and possibly venting online\u2014has become part of the pregame process for fans, even if wider distribution is contributing to increased exposure for the league and rising salaries for its players.
