A meteor<\/a> exploded off the coast of Massachusetts on May 30, and video and audio clips shared online captured the fireball and massive boom it caused.<\/p>\n

NASA<\/a> confirmed through satellite images that the meteor broke apart at an altitude of about 40 miles over northeastern Massachusetts at 2:06 p.m. ET.<\/p>\n

The agency said in a statement<\/a> on X that the meteor released energy equivalent to about 300 tons of TNT explosives, causing a loud noise in the area. The pieces of the meteor landed in Cape Cod Bay, NASA<\/a> also said.<\/p>\n

People as far south as Rhode Island and Cape Cod reported feeling it on the ground, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.<\/p>\n

Here’s a look at videos capturing the sights and sounds of the meteor.<\/p>\n

The American Meteor Society<\/a> said it received more than 80 witness reports from people who saw the fireball across states including Maryland, New York, Vermont and even up into Canada.<\/p>\n

While the meteor caused an eruption across Massachusetts, it was seen falling in nearby states before the explosion.<\/p>\n

One video clip, captured on a dash cam and shared with Storyful, shows the fireball flying through the sky in Rome, New York, about 40 miles east of Syracuse.<\/p>\n

A powerful meteor exploded high over Massachusetts and New Hampshire, creating a loud sonic boom heard across New England and New York.<\/p>\n

The driver, Daniel Wilcox, told Storyful he was driving to a fishing spot with a coworker at the time.<\/p>\n

“We noticed a bright glow and fast moving object shooting straight downward. I quickly recognized it as a meteor,” Wilcox said.<\/p>\n

Homeowners captured boom on surveillance cameras<\/p>\n

Across Massachusetts and Rhode Island, homeowners unexpectedly caught the sound of the boom through surveillance cameras.<\/p>\n

In Milford, Massachusetts, which is about 30 miles west of Boston, Wendy Kroy’s home surveillance camera picked up audio of what sounded like a massive but brief explosion. She later shared the video on X.<\/a><\/p>\n

A few towns over, in Millis, Massachusetts, Angela Chansky’s dog recognized the bang immediately. In footage caught on a living room camera that she posted on Facebook<\/a>, the dog instantly jumped off its spot on the couch as the boom erupted.<\/p>\n

Further south, in Cumberland, Rhode Island, the outdoor video camera on Dave Mulcahey’s home shot a much fainter popping noise, per a video he shared on X.<\/a><\/p>\n
