The temperature was about 20 degrees warmer and the players dealt with heavy rain on the pitch instead of snow, but the outcome for Canada\u2019s national soccer team on Monday night was the same as it was\u00a0in\u00a02021.<\/p>\n

Jonathan Osorio scored for\u00a0Canada\u00a0at the 58-minute mark of the second half and Jayden Nelson added an insurance marker one minute into stoppage time\u00a0in\u00a0its\u00a02-0\u00a0win over\u00a0Uzbekistan\u00a0at Commonwealth Stadium. It was the first of two pre-World\u00a0Cup\u00a0friendlies.<\/p>\n

Tani Oluwaseyi gave Osorio a clear shot from just outside the right side of the box and his shot eluded keeper Abduvohid Nematov.<\/p>\n

Nelson then chipped the ball past Nematov from\u00a0in\u00a0close\u00a0in\u00a0the first minute of stoppage time.<\/p>\n

The last time\u00a0Canada\u00a0played\u00a0in\u00a0Edmonton,\u00a0in\u00a0November 2021, they played\u00a0in\u00a0-9 Celsius temperatures on a frozen pitch surrounded by snowbanks. On Monday it was warmer, about 11 C, but the pitch was waterlogged after two days of heavy rain that continued throughout the match.<\/p>\n

More than 44,000 fans braved the cold\u00a0in\u00a02021 and Monday\u2019s attendance was announced at 46,164.<\/p>\n

Canada\u00a0had a decided advantage\u00a0in\u00a0possession time and field position through the first 15 minutes but couldn\u2019t penetrate Uzbekistan\u2019s five-man defence inside the box.\u00a0Canada\u00a0did create some potential scoring opportunities but couldn\u2019t finish off their\u00a0in-close passing plays.<\/p>\n

Uzbekistan\u00a0had the better scoring chances\u00a0in\u00a0the first 45 minutes. Eldor Shomurodov had three excellent chances but failed to convert. He was sent\u00a0in\u00a0alone\u00a0in\u00a0the sixth minute but his chip over Canadian goalie Maxime Crepeau rolled wide of the net. Crepeau also thwarted Shomurodov with outstanding saves\u00a0in\u00a0the 26th and 43rd minutes.<\/p>\n

But\u00a0Canada, with numerous substitutions on for the second half, was even more aggressive offensively and began to find cracks\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0Uzbekistan\u00a0defence.\u00a0Canada\u00a0created a number of good scoring chances that ultimately resulted\u00a0in\u00a0the goals and the victory.<\/p>\n

Team\u00a0Canada\u00a0now moves to Montreal to play its final pre-tournament game, against Ireland on Friday.<\/p>\n

For the\u00a0World\u00a0Cup\u00a0beginning June 12,\u00a0Canada\u00a0is slotted\u00a0in\u00a0Group B with Switzerland, Qatar and Bosnia and Herzegovina.<\/p>\n
