April 16, 2015<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-9d8ceb43-1299-425c-aa53-d5746145a60e\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">In this striking satellite photo, rusty-orange water appears to bleed across the salty white floor of a high-altitude lagoon in Bolivia.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Laguna Colorada (&#8220;Red Lagoon&#8221; in Spanish) is a hypersaline, or extremely salty, lake in Bolivia&#8217;s Altiplano \u2014 the world&#8217;s second-highest plateau, which stretches across the Andes. It sits around 14,100 feet (4,300 meters) above sea level.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-9d8ceb43-1299-425c-aa53-d5746145a60e-2\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">The lagoon was once much larger, which is evident thanks to the striations of an ancient shoreline visible along its right edge. As it eventually dried out, an uneven layer of borax salt (sodium tetraborate) was left behind. These salty crystals often rise above the water level, creating bright-white islands and causing the &#8220;bleeding&#8221; effect when viewed from above.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-5196092a-2c22-4801-8c89-531c1492226a\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">The water&#8217;s reddish hues come from algae, predominantly Dunaliella salina. This salt-loving species is rich in red pigments known as carotenoids, and is responsible for creating <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/planet-earth\/astronaut-snaps-salty-pink-valentines-day-heart-shining-in-argentina-earth-from-space\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/planet-earth\/astronaut-snaps-salty-pink-valentines-day-heart-shining-in-argentina-earth-from-space\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/planet-earth\/astronaut-snaps-salty-pink-valentines-day-heart-shining-in-argentina-earth-from-space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">similarly reddish waters across the globe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">The lake is often much redder. However, the water&#8217;s hue changes based on its temperature and salinity, which determine the growth of various alga species, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/laguna-colorada-86135\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/laguna-colorada-86135\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NASA&#8217;s Earth Observatory<\/a>. Its surroundings are home to a number of animals, including mountain cats, foxes and llamas. However, its most famous residents are flamingos.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">At least three species of the bright-pink birds \u2014 the Andean flamingo (Phoenicoparrus andinus), the Chilean flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis) and the James&#8217;s flamingo (Phoenicoparrus jamesi) \u2014 frequent the lagoon and get their vibrant coloration from eating the carotenoid-rich algae.
