That money will be used primarily for the Quebec City tramway project, the renovation of m\u00e9tro stations and other transit projects that will be announced later.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The funding will also support the development of bus networks and maintenance of existing transportation infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Another $400 million comes from the Zero Emission Public Transit Fund<\/a> that will support 11 projects aimed at electrifying public transportation systems throughout Quebec.<\/p>\n Also announced was a $3.6 billion agreement under the Build Communities Strong Fund<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n Carney said those investments would help build housing, university campuses and community centres while also supporting major modernization and expansion projects at 17 hospitals and clinics across Quebec.<\/p>\n Among the facilities expected to benefit are Charles-Le Moyne Hospital, H\u00f4tel-Dieu de L\u00e9vis, Chicoutimi Hospital and Montreal\u2019s Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital<\/a>, whose deteriorating condition has repeatedly drawn public attention.<\/p>\n Fr\u00e9chette emphasized the need to modernize existing infrastructure. Many of Quebec\u2019s major public assets were built in the 1960s and 1970s and now require substantial investment, she said.<\/p>\n \u201cSo we\u2019re going to place even more emphasis on the maintenance, upgrading and modernization of our current infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n She described the work ahead as \u201can enormous task\u201d and said Quebec intends to make use of private-sector expertise to accelerate delivery.<\/p>\n \u201cIt will also allow us to innovate and work with the private sector, because it\u2019s my intention to leverage the expertise of the private sector to carry out this major project,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Earlier Tuesday, Carney was asked about the agreements having been \u201cunblocked\u201d by his government, saying \u201cwe\u201d unlocked them.<\/p>\n Asked what he meant, the prime minister said federal and provincial officials had aligned their priorities and moved quickly to advance projects that had stalled.<\/p>\n \u201cWe had a very clear meeting of minds and priorities,\u201d Carney said.<\/p>\n The agreements emerged from discussions between governments and municipalities about which projects should move forward first.<\/p>\n \u201cWe sat down, we made the priorities. We\u2019re going to get on with it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s what is good for Quebec and good for Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n Municipal leaders welcome announcement<\/p>\n In Longueuil, there were federal, provincial and municipal leaders, including Quebec lieutenant Jo\u00ebl Lightbound, Longueuil MP Sherry Romanado, Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada, Laval Mayor St\u00e9phane Boyer and Longueuil Mayor Catherine Fournier.<\/p>\n \u201cThis was an agreement waited for many, many years and months now,\u201d Martinez Ferrada told The Gazette.<\/p>\n The mayor credited both governments for striking a deal.<\/p>\n \u201cVery happy that the political will of the Prime Minister of Canada and the Premier of Quebec finally reached an agreement that will give the financial support that we need all across Quebec.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI can\u2019t wait to work with the government of Quebec to see how that\u2019s going to be implemented here, also in the city of Montreal.\u201d<\/p>\n PQ: Ottawa trying to keep separatists out<\/p>\n Parti Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, however, immediately took aim, suggesting beforehand that Ottawa was attempting to influence Quebec politics ahead of this fall\u2019s election<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThe federal government clearly has a lot of interest in the coming election in Quebec,\u201d St-Pierre Plamondon said.<\/p>\n He argued the funding announcement was intended to help prevent a PQ victory. The party, which currently leads in the recent polls, has promised to hold a third referendum on Quebec sovereignty if elected.<\/p>\n Carney rejected the suggestion.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is policy.
