Nvidia has long made graphics cards that powered the Windows PC ecosystem for decades\u2014now it wants to control the whole thing with \u201csuperchips,\u201d starting with the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/products\/rtx-spark\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/products\/rtx-spark\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/products\/rtx-spark\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RTX Spark<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Announced over the weekend at the Computex tech expo in Taiwan, RTX Spark chips combine unified memory, RTX graphics, and the new part: the N1 CPU. Nvidia already owns the entire world of AI processed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/data-centers\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">data centers<\/a> with its GPUs. But now it&#8217;s making its play for locally run AI too. It&#8217;s just a tease of what&#8217;s to come right now, but these are the first Windows devices that may actually live up to the overused \u201cAI PC\u201d name.<\/p>\n<p>The Fake AI PC<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Microsoft has been talking up the idea of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/what-is-copilot-plus-pc\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cAI PCs\u201d since 2024<\/a>, but it has never felt real. Sure, its Copilot+ PCs had built-in neural processing units (NPUs) and started with 16 GB of RAM, but they didn&#8217;t have the performance to run <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-chatgpt-works-large-language-model\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">large language models<\/a> locally any more than your phone. Rather than build the hype machine around AI, Microsoft&#8217;s early promises about the next era of the PC felt empty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While they need to be tested, and prices are still undetermined, these new Nvidia laptops look truly like real AI PCs. The combination of unified memory up to 128 GB, an efficient <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/chip-design-firm-arm-is-making-its-own-ai-cpu\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arm-based CPU<\/a>, and the company&#8217;s trademark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/gallery\/best-graphics-cards-gpu\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RTX graphics cards<\/a> gives you a computer unheard of outside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/which-macbook-should-you-buy\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MacBook Pro<\/a>. This competition is important as the MacBook Pro (or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/gallery\/best-apple-desktop-computer\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mac desktops<\/a>) was the only serious option for AI enthusiasts looking to run foundation-level models locally.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Image may contain Computer Electronics Laptop Pc Computer Hardware and Hardware\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"ResponsiveImageContainer-dkeESL cQPiWi responsive-image__image\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/MSFT-R-Homepage-Carousel-2-new.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Courtesy of Microsoft<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Nvidia is opening up its technology to the usual collaborators in the Windows space, such as HP, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, and others. <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/surface\/devices\/surface-laptop-ultra\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/surface\/devices\/surface-laptop-ultra&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/surface\/devices\/surface-laptop-ultra\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft&#8217;s own Surface Laptop Ultra<\/a>, though, might be the pinnacle of this new breed of PC. It&#8217;s a proper MacBook Pro alternative, featuring a 15-inch Mini-LED display and several ports in a package that appears to be similar in size. Microsoft hasn&#8217;t had a performance-driven Surface device in years, and this one comes ahead of a rumored \u201cMacBook Pro Ultra\u201d coming later this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">I&#8217;d be lying if I said I wasn&#8217;t excited. One of the issues with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/gallery\/best-windows-laptops\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Windows laptops<\/a> that try to compete with the MacBook Pro is battery life. Because they always need to rely on discrete graphics cards (usually from Nvidia), things like battery life and fan noise tend to nose-dive. Only this year, with the release of Intel&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/intel-panther-lake-core-ultra-series-3-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">new Core Ultra Series 3 chips<\/a>, have we seen laptops like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/review\/dell-xps-14-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dell XPS 14<\/a> that can balance GPU performance and battery life closer to the level of the MacBook Pro. But those configurations max out at 64 GB of memory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It&#8217;s not just about more memory. It&#8217;s also the fact that the graphics will be up to as powerful as a discrete <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/review\/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5070-fe\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RTX 5070<\/a>. And it&#8217;s also the software layer (known as CUDA) that allows developers to access the system&#8217;s GPU cores. Nvidia has built a highly developed AI platform around CUDA because of its use in data centers. Bringing that AI processing prowess to local PCs could mean AI performance that pulls far more out of the hardware than current computers do. Mac development has grown rapidly over the past year, but it&#8217;s still far behind the scale that Nvidia could do with RTX Spark.<\/p>\n<p>Sparking a Revolution<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Don&#8217;t be fooled into thinking these will be priced affordably. Some reports estimate that prices for high-end configurations of RTX Spark laptops will be over $4,000. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/silicon-valley-agentic-individuals-future-of-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">agentic models<\/a> become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/meet-microsoft-scout-your-ai-coworker-that-never-logs-off\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">easier to use<\/a> and more streamlined, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/google-gemini-spark-ai-agent-hands-on\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">using them locally<\/a> will increasingly be preferred for privacy reasons too. We&#8217;re already seeing the demand skyrocket for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/review\/apple-mac-mini-m4-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mac Mini<\/a>, which is facing long shipping times that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/apple-sold-out-mac-mini-openclaw\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apple attributes to surprisingly fast AI adoption<\/a>.
