We will see an Italian finalist playing for a maiden major championship on Sunday though he\u2019s not the Italian man many expected to play for the title after Italy\u2019s top two stars bit the dust.<\/p>\n
The tournament that began with 2025 semifinalist Lorenzo Musetti withdrawing due to injury then saw world No. 1 Jannik Sinner succumb to severe heat and left-hander Juan Manuel Cerundolo losing 18 of the last 20 games in a shocking second-round exit.<\/p>\n
Last fall, Cobolli and\u00a0childhood friend Matteo Berrettini led Italy to its third consecutive Davis Cup championship before passionate home fans in Bologna. Italy became the first nation to three-peat as Davis Cup champion since the United States won four in a row between 1968-1971. The Italians did it playing without their top two stars Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti.<\/p>\n
On Friday, Cobolli will face compatriot Matteo Arnaldi for a spot in Sunday\u2019s final.<\/p>\n
In the final all-Matteo men\u2019s quarterfinal, Matteo Arnaldi led Matteo Berrettini 7-5, 5-2 when the 2021 Wimbledon finalist retired due to an apparent hip injury. Arnaldi advanced to his maiden major semifinal. Berrettini\u2019s exit leaves second-seeded Alexander Zverev as the only former Grand Slam singles finalist to reach the final four.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor sure it will be another derby, but I think we have to be happy for the Italian tennis,\u201d Cobolli said. \u201cAnother Italian, apart Sinner and Lorenzo, are in the final this week.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo we have to be happy, and we have to enjoy that match.\u201d<\/p>\n
Today, Cobolli\u2019s serve, particularly his confounding kick serve on the ad side, not only saved him from break-point problems, it consistently set up his first strike.<\/p>\n
