The John Wick spin-off centered around Donnie Yen’s character Caine<\/a> just recently entered production this year<\/a>. Filming of the action flick came a year after the Lionsgate Cinema Con presentation that promised plenty more John Wick movies were in development. However, Caine stood out the most in the announcements, as the blind hitman was a scene stealer in John Wick Chapter 4. With his unique eye for action and grounded choreography, Yen’s character is the perfect candidate for his own story. The movie, which is also directed by Yen, has assembled an impressive cast, and a new report has revealed another actor has joined the production.<\/p>\n

Deadline<\/a> has revealed that Mason Thames has signed on for a role in Caine. The live-action How to Train Your Dragon actor is joining Yen and previously announced cast members Rina Sawayama and Darce Montgomery. Sawayama, who was also in John Wick Chapter 4, is reprising her role as Akira, as the post-credits scene of Chapter 4 teased that she would be seeking revenge on Caine for killing her father. Interestingly, details about Thames’ character, along with a logline and plot details for the movie, are being kept under wraps.<\/p>\n

Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, who serve as producers of the John Wick films and their spin-offs (the only one being released thus far being Ana de Armas’ Ballerina), are also executive producing Caine. Keanu Reeves is also attached as producer, though it hasn’t been confirmed if he will be featured in the movie on screen in any capacity. The character seemingly dies at the end of Chapter 4, though the announcement of a fifth entry seems to confirm that the legendary assassin will find some way to return<\/a> for another action-packed installment.<\/p>\n

Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote The Batman Part II, wrote the screenplay for Caine. Given the secrecy surrounding the project, it wouldn’t be surprising if it somehow leads into the fifth chapter of the mainline John Wick outings. To that extent, Thames’ character could end up playing an important role moving forward, which would also explain why no details of his character have been revealed. With Caine having been freed from the grip of the High Table at the end of Chapter 4, the movie could feature the character going up against the organization, similar to how Wick did in the past few movies.<\/p>\n

Thames just recently finished filming How to Train Your Dragon 2, the live-action remake of the original DreamWorks animated movie of the same name. The actor is also known for his work on The Black Phone films, which Scott Derrickson directed.
