The Italian forced to stop against compatriot Matteo Arnaldi with a hip injury \u2013 and visibly weary of a body that keeps breaking down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pain began early. \u201cIn the middle of the first set I started to feel something when I was serving,\u201d Berrettini said. \u201cThe more I played, the more I served, the more forehands I hit, the worse I felt.\u201d After a medical time-out, during which he was told the area was badly inflamed, he concluded he had no option. \u201cIf I\u2019d kept playing I\u2019d have done way worse, and the recovery would have been longer,\u201d he said. \u201cI didn\u2019t have any choice other than to retire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1900\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Arnaldi_Berrettini_2026_handshake.jpg\" alt=\"Matteo Arnaldi and Matteo Berrettini, Roland-Garros 2026\" class=\"wp-image-852438\"  \/>Matteo Arnaldi and Matteo Berrettini, Roland-Garros 2026 | \u00a9 Christophe Ena \/ SIPA<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hardest part, he said, was not the decision itself but its familiarity. \u201cIt was really hard \u2013 mostly because I\u2019ve done it many times, and I\u2019m tired of retiring,\u201d Berrettini said. \u201cI\u2019m the last one who wants to retire. I don\u2019t want to do it, but sometimes you have to.\u201d He spoke of being robbed of an ending: \u201cI just wanted to finish my match. I feel it took away the chance to perform until the last point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He identified the problem as his hip \u2013 distinct, he said, from the right-hip trouble that hampered him in 2019 and 2020 \u2013 and was unwilling to guess at a timeline. \u201cThis area I know less,\u201d Berrettini said. \u201cI don\u2019t know how long it\u2019ll keep me out; I\u2019ll leave that to the doctors.\u201d His fear was specific: \u201cIn my head there was the thought of not wanting to be out three months. I hope I stopped in time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s hope we see each other again.<\/p>\n<p>  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patrickmouratoglou.com\/en\/champion-mindset-pre-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mx-auto\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><br \/>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Banner-Social-Media-Facebook-scaled.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"aspect-3-1 mx-auto max-w-full overflow-hidden object-cover md:max-w-xl\"\/><br \/>\n  <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet he was determined to leave with perspective intact. Weeks ago, he noted, his presence in the last eight would have seemed impossible. \u201cA few days ago it would have been crazy to think of me in the quarter-finals,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ll try to go back home with a smile. I\u2019m disappointed and sad, but I\u2019m also proud of the way I fought through this tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Berrettini, who reached the fourth round here for the first time since his 2021 Wimbledon-final season, now faces an anxious wait on scans, with grass \u2013 long his best surface \u2013 and Wimbledon, just over three weeks away, both in jeopardy. \u201cI felt in rhythm, I felt there were good sensations on court,\u201d he said. \u201cLet\u2019s hope we see each other again.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Matteo Berrettini\u2019s run to the Roland-Garros quarter-finals ended in retirement on Tuesday.
