\u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d<\/a> remains impossible to pin down.<\/p>\n

Across its first seven episodes, the Apple TV original has assumed the shapes of multiple different horror subgenres \u2014 environment, supernatural, folk and colonial, just to name a few. In its eighth and latest episode<\/a>, titled \u201cYour Baggage,\u201d the series goes full slasher.<\/p>\n

Basking in the afterglow of their successful journey to kill immortal Widow\u2019s Bay founder Richard Warren (Hamish Linklater) in last week\u2019s \u201cSeasickness\u201d<\/a> and, in doing so, rid the island of the curse he bound it to, \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d Episode 8 follows Tom (Matthew Rhys)<\/a>, Wyck (Stephen Root) and Patricia (Kate O\u2019Flynn)<\/a> as they each attempt to reset their previous lives. Wyck tries to reconnect with museum curator Gerrie (Nancy Lenehan), Tom makes plans to take his son Evan (Kingston Rumi Southwick) to travel to the mainland for a Red Sox game and Patricia starts sorting through her closet.<\/p>\n

Their bittersweet celebrations are violently interrupted when the masked, local serial killer known as the Boogeyman (Airon Armstrong) breaks out of his sealed, backroad home and sneaks into Patricia\u2019s to finish the job he started decades prior. Wyck discovers the Boogeyman\u2019s return before anyone else and races over to try to warn Patricia. Fortunately, while the Boogeyman successfully manages to slink his way into Patricia\u2019s pitch-black bedroom, she listens to her own gut when it warns her to run.<\/p>\n

She grabs her rechargeable taser and makes her getaway in her pajamas, kicking off a long chase across Widow\u2019s Bay in which Patricia is stalked Michael Myers-style by the silent, slow-moving-and-yet-always-close Boogeyman. At least one unsuspecting paramedic is killed and Sheriff Bechir Clemmons (Kevin Carroll) is wounded by the resurrected killer from Patricia\u2019s past in an episode that \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d creator Katie Dippold<\/a> told TheWrap was originally envisioned \u2014 like last week\u2019s \u201cOur History\u201d \u2014 as a flashback experiment.<\/p>\n

\u201cOriginally, we talked about that episode as just doing it as a flashback of when Patricia was a teenager and showing what happened,\u201d Dippold divulged. \u201cBut then we were like, \u2018Well, we have this amazing actress who\u2019s so funny. It\u2019d be so much more fun to watch this 40-year-old woman running through the streets.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFun\u201d is the right word to describe \u201cYour Baggage,\u201d written by Emma Ketchum and directed by \u201cFriendship\u201d filmmaker Andrew DeYoung, who also directed the \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d mushroom trip installment \u201cWhat to Expect on Your Trip.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are long stretches of \u201cYour Baggage\u201d that are as terrifying as any slasher movie in recent memory, and then moments, like when O\u2019Flynn\u2019s Patricia trips on her own taser\u2019s cable, that are surreal and blackly, gut-bustingly funny. That cocktail of screwball humor and blood-curdling horror has been an integral part of \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d since the very beginning, and it is one that the show\u2019s creative team thought about a lot when they were putting \u201cYour Baggage\u201d together.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of this season was following that gut feeling of, \u2018Do we want to be scared right now, or do we want to have fun?,\u2019 and constantly balancing that,\u201d Dippold explained. \u201cFor Episode 8, I wanted people to be scared when she\u2019s in her house and you know he\u2019s coming. But then, once you\u2019re off to the races, Kate O\u2019Flynn is just so funny. The idea of her sprinting through the streets with this man slowly following her just really made us laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia finds no help from anyone throughout her Boogeyman chase, including Sheriff Clemmons and her former high school tormentor-friends, one of whom (Lauren Bittner\u2019s Kris) she eventually just tasers out of frustration. Despite that, Patricia comes out on top, partly burning the Boogeyman alive and then hitting him with two deadly shotgun blasts. <\/p>\n

In the montage that follows \u2014 set to Enya\u2019s \u201cCaribbean Blue\u201d \u2014 Patricia keeps her shotgun aimed at the motionless Boogeyman all the way through his paramedic ride and right up to the moment when his body is sealed and cremated. Dippold described the episode\u2019s ending as a \u201ctriumph\u201d for O\u2019Flynn\u2019s neurotic protagonist.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was important. We wanted her to have that triumph at the end because she\u2019s someone who starts in a real victim mode,\u201d Dippold told TheWrap. \u201cShe has a real victim complex, but there is nowhere for her to go for help in Episode 8, so she finally has to do it herself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, while the events of \u201cYour Baggage\u201d affirm Patricia\u2019s growing strength and belief in herself, it undoes the same for both Wyck and Tom. The Boogeyman\u2019s return means the curse on Widow\u2019s Bay has not actually lifted, a realization that leaves both men reeling in the face of seemingly unconquerable evil. \u201cYour Baggage,\u201d consequently, concludes with Wyck interrupting Tom\u2019s joyous reconciliation with Evan to inform him that the curse is still alive and well.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not over,\u201d Wyck wearily tells Tom, as the wind outside picks up speed, thunder sounds and unseen storm clouds start to gather in the night sky.<\/p>\n

\u201cLoftis thinks the curse is over. He\u2019s celebrating with his son and it seems like the start of a new chapter,\u201d Dippold said of the episode\u2019s concluding moments, noting, \u201cBut it\u2019s never over.\u201d<\/p>\n
