{"id":71713,"date":"2025-08-15T13:44:13","date_gmt":"2025-08-15T13:44:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/71713\/"},"modified":"2025-08-15T13:44:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T13:44:13","slug":"summers-spent-in-st-martins-inspired-childrens-story-sea-glass-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/71713\/","title":{"rendered":"Summers spent in St. Martins inspired children&#8217;s story Sea Glass Summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Heidi Jardine Stoddart&#8217;s love of stories and the shore began when she was a child, and decades later her memories of summers at her family cottage in St. Martins inspired a children&#8217;s book.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Stoddart&#8217;s book, Sea Glass Summer, is part of this year&#8217;s Books and Backroads series.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Readers in six small communities in rural areas of New Brunswick\u00a0took part in book clubs in CBC&#8217;s partnership with\u00a0New Brunswick public libraries \u2014 reading books from all genres and all with a connection to New Brunswick.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;I have wanted to make books since I was a young girl,&#8221; said Stoddart, who is now an elementary school teacher and an author and illustrator.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Sea Glass Summer tells the story of a young girl named Molly and her special relationship with her grandmother. The pair love to spend time\u00a0together every summer collecting shells and sea glass along the beach at their cottage.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;I can relate to Molly in the story, moving away, because my family left New Brunswick when I was a young girl,&#8221; said Stoddart, who grew up in Waterloo, Ont.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She said she writes about New Brunswick because of &#8220;the geography, the lure, the pull, the magic of the ocean and the seashore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Sea Glass Summer is based loosely on our family cottage in St. Martins and it&#8217;s about the connection between the generations,&#8221; Stoddart said, and there are &#8220;little snippets of my past sprinkled throughout the story.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Book club members relate to summers at the beach<\/p>\n<p>Stoddart\u00a0read her story to book club members at the Grand Manan Public Library, and her soft, soothing voice helped keep them riveted to the story.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She paused throughout to ask questions about their\u00a0personal connections to things in the book, including a &#8220;wishing rock&#8221; that Molly finds on the beach.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"woman with blonde hair holds up children's book and reads to table filled with children and a couple of parents\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/sea-glass-summer-reading.JPG\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.3915094339622642\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Author and illustrator Heidi Jardine Stoddart reads her book to members of the Books and Backroads book club at the Grand Manan Public Library. (Grand Manan Library\/Instagram)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Rory Greene said that, like Molly, he also had a wishing rock, and Sadie Greene said if she had one, she would &#8220;wish for a horse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Stoddart\u00a0remembers being the same age as the children in the book club and said as the &#8220;big sister&#8221;\u00a0in her own family,\u00a0 she grew up playing school and writing stories for her younger sisters.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">LISTEN: Young Grand Manan readers share their summer memories:<\/p>\n<p>Information Morning &#8211; Saint JohnBooks and Backroads Grand Manan<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re back with books and backroads with another edition of books and backroads this week. CBC&#8217;s Saint John host Emily Brass discusses &#8220;Sea Glass Summer&#8221; with some young readers from Grand Manan.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She credits her &#8220;amazing teacher&#8221; in Grade 4 for seeing her interest in writing and giving her\u00a0extra time to work on stories and even create illustrations for them.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When she launched her first book her teacher was there.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;That brought tears to my eyes,&#8221; Stoddart said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Stoddart\u00a0said she usually starts with the narrative, then works on the visual side.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"woman sitting around table with children\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/books-and-backroads-grand-manan.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.7327459618208516\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>CBC host Emily Brass discusses Sea Glass Summer with young readers at the Grand Manan Public Library. (Cindy Grant\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;I tend to get the story written first,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;And then I start to storyboard and figure out, &#8216;OK, which words will go with which page and which illustrations and where will it make sense to turn the page.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She was &#8220;surprised and delighted&#8221; to be part of Books and Backroads\u00a0and admits she can often be critical of her work, something she is trying to overcome.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;It&#8217;s just been an absolute delight,&#8221; Stoddart said.\u00a0&#8220;It&#8217;s just such a charming series to feature &#8216;off the beaten path&#8217; public libraries.
