The mandate came despite sanctioning bodies rarely forcing champions to fight rival titleholders, suggesting the WBC moved to protect its own financial interests over Zuffa’s matchmaking plans.

Opetaia had been willing to chase the WBC belt shortly after the IBF stripped him following his points win over Brandon Glanton in his Zuffa debut on March 8 in Las Vegas. That willingness showed how much alphabet titles still matter to fighters, even those signed to a promotion built on marginalizing sanctioning organizations. The WBC justified the Benavidez order by citing the newly crowned WBA and WBO champion’s request to face Mikaelian next, though Idec noted the Mexico City-based body stands to collect more sanctioning fees from a Benavidez-Mikaelian bout than from Opetaia-Mikaelian.

Opetaia Left Without Belt Options

If Benavidez stays at cruiserweight and fights Mikaelian as ordered, Opetaia will likely face the winner of Chris Billam-Smith versus Ryan Rozicki on Saturday in Bournemouth, England. That matchup headlines Zuffa’s first UK card. While Billam-Smith or Rozicki would make a competitive opponent, neither bout gives Opetaia a path to another alphabet belt.

The WBC interference represents a broader challenge for Zuffa’s long-term vision. “If the cruiserweight issues Zuffa has encountered since announcing the Opetaia signing are an accurate gauge of what’s to come, marginalizing sanctioning bodies might become more of an uphill battle than its leadership anticipated,” Idec wrote.

Elsewhere at 130 pounds, Idec reported that a unification between WBC champion O’Shaquie Foster and IBF-WBO titleholder Emanuel Navarrete makes more sense for both Top Rank-promoted fighters than Foster chasing Shakur Stevenson despite their post-fight confrontation in Houston on Saturday. Foster is ranked second by The Ring behind Navarrete at junior lightweight. Dmitry Bivol stopped Michael Eifert in a tune-up Saturday in Russia, with promoter Eddie Hearn reportedly eyeing Callum Smith next, though Idec called that bout unnecessary given Beterbiev already knocked Smith out in January 2024.

Source: ringmagazine.com

Zuffa Boxing’s cruiserweight championship strategy hit a wall when the WBC ordered titleholder Noel Mikaelian to face David…

[447
703,49,48,82
post-718153","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-boxing","tag-boxing","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-sports
["GET
