{"id":718328,"date":"2026-06-06T05:03:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-06T05:03:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/718328\/"},"modified":"2026-06-06T05:03:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-06T05:03:08","slug":"despite-attempted-arson-attack-congregants-attend-evening-service-at-westmount-synagogue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/718328\/","title":{"rendered":"Despite attempted arson attack, congregants attend evening service at Westmount synagogue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Less than 24 hours after an attempted arson attack damaged Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, congregants were once again filing through the doors of the Westmount synagogue for Friday evening services.<\/p>\n<p>Among them was Kat Romanow, who arrived with her husband and four-year-old son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as I heard what happened today, I was definitely shaken,\u201d Romanow said in an interview with The Gazette.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A 38-year-old Montreal man faces six charges including arson, arson by negligence and possession of an explosive, in connection with the overnight incident. <a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/local-crime\/synagogue-arson-attempt-westmount\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Steven Luu appeared in court on Friday<\/a> and was ordered detained until a hearing on Monday. The Crown has also requested that he undergo a mental-health evaluation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada and Prime Minister Mark Carney were among those who condemned the incident, describing antisemitism as having no place in Montreal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For Romanow, however, there was little question about whether her family would attend services that evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course there is a part of me that\u2019s nervous,\u201d she said. \u201cBut almost immediately there was another part of me that said \u2018We have to go tonight.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Romanow has attended Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom since 2016. A convert to Judaism, she said the congregation has become a central part of her family\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family and I come here regularly,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a very welcoming congregation. You\u2019re made to feel comfortable as soon as you walk in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said she has noticed what she believes is a significant rise in antisemitism in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels undeniable to myself and to friends and family that there has been a very significant rise,\u201d Romanow said.<\/p>\n<p>Outside the synagogue, police vehicles and additional security were visible as congregants arrived.
