Steven Luu appeared in court on Friday<\/a> and was ordered detained until a hearing on Monday. The Crown has also requested that he undergo a mental-health evaluation.\u00a0<\/p>\nMontreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada and Prime Minister Mark Carney were among those who condemned the incident, describing antisemitism as having no place in Montreal.\u00a0<\/p>\n
For Romanow, however, there was little question about whether her family would attend services that evening.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course there is a part of me that\u2019s nervous,\u201d she said. \u201cBut almost immediately there was another part of me that said \u2018We have to go tonight.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Romanow has attended Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom since 2016. A convert to Judaism, she said the congregation has become a central part of her family\u2019s life.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy family and I come here regularly,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a very welcoming congregation. You\u2019re made to feel comfortable as soon as you walk in.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said she has noticed what she believes is a significant rise in antisemitism in recent years.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt feels undeniable to myself and to friends and family that there has been a very significant rise,\u201d Romanow said.<\/p>\n
Outside the synagogue, police vehicles and additional security were visible as congregants arrived. Romanow said security has long been part of attending services, though the presence was noticeably heightened Friday evening.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re used to seeing security when we come to temple,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s shocking that that\u2019s necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n
Temple executive director Chad Lubelsky said synagogue leaders spent much of Friday communicating with congregants and arranging additional security measures ahead of the evening service.<\/p>\n
Lubelsky said one of the defining characteristics of the congregation is its commitment to remaining engaged with the broader community.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were founded with the express intention of bridge-building and being part of a larger community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Despite the attack, he said, congregants continued to arrive for services.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne of the things that I\u2019ve learned working at the synagogue is the resilience of the congregation,\u201d Lubelsky said. \u201cPeople still want to come.\u201d<\/p>\n
For Romanow, Friday night\u2019s service was ultimately about something simple: being present.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re here for our family, for our community,\u201d she said. \u201cCelebrating and coming together and finding joy together.\u201d<\/p>\n
