{"id":718563,"date":"2026-06-06T07:48:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-06T07:48:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/718563\/"},"modified":"2026-06-06T07:48:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-06T07:48:14","slug":"mumps-outbreak-at-toronto-serviceontario-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/718563\/","title":{"rendered":"Mumps outbreak at Toronto ServiceOntario office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Toronto Public Health (TPH) is investigating a mumps outbreak linked to a downtown ServiceOntario office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In a statement to CP24 on Friday, TPH said there are four confirmed cases so far. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cExposure was limited to non-public-facing, head-office roles, with no direct interaction with the public, so the risk of broader community spread is low,\u201d TPH said, noting that the office is located at 777 Bay Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The local health unit added that it is following up with identifiable contacts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mumps is a disease caused by the mumps virus. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It causes swelling of the neck or cheeks. Symptoms also include fever, headache, malaise, myalgia and anorexia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/diseases\/mumps\/health-professionals.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/diseases\/mumps\/health-professionals.html\">According to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC)<\/a>, the virus spreads through infectious respiratory particles or secretions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWith the introduction of routine mumps vaccination programs in Canada beginning in 1969, mumps has transitioned from being a common childhood infection to a relatively rare disease,\u201d PHAC said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cNonetheless, outbreaks of mumps continue to occur in Canada with an increasing proportion of cases occurring in teenagers and young adults.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Toronto Public Health (TPH) is investigating a mumps outbreak linked to a downtown ServiceOntario office.
