Summer on the small screen sees old favourites back with new seasons (House of the Dragon, Crave, June 21), surprise returns (Ted Lasso, Apple TV, Aug. 5) and final exits (The Bear\u2019s final season, Disney+, June 24).<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s also the time of year when the networks and streamers pull something entirely new off the shelf \u2013 though, of course, usually based on something they\u2019ve literally pulled off a shelf. Here are 10 new series to give a try, seven of which are adapted from books.<\/p>\n

Technically, this isn\u2019t a brand-new Anne Rice-inspired series, but Interview with the Vampire back for a third season under another name. The focus now shifts to Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid) and that vampire\u2019s career as a rock star. Shot in and around Toronto, Canadian playwright-cum-screenwriter Hannah Moscovitch is one of the show\u2019s key bloody-minded creatives. Premieres June 7<\/p>\n

Alice and Steve, Disney+<\/p>\n

This provocatively premised British comedy is about a middle-aged man who starts dating his female best friend\u2019s daughter. The trailer for the show, created and written by Sophie Goodhart (Sex Education) and starring Nicola Walker (The Split) and Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords), is giving YouTube commenters the ick \u2013 but it won the award for best series at Canneseries in France earlier this year. Premieres June 8<\/p>\n

Every Year After, Prime Video <\/p>\n

Amazon\u2019s streamer is betting big on bookending the summer with Canadian lakeside romance. First comes this adaptation of Toronto author Carley Fortune\u2019s bestseller Every Summer After. Amy B. Harris, whose TV credits include Sex and the City and Gossip Girl, is showrunner on this series about Persephone (Percy) Fraser (Sadie Soverall) and the six summers (and one week) where she turned and remained pretty. Premieres June 10<\/p>\n

Rezervations for Two, APTN and APTN+<\/p>\n

Turtle Love Island? Not quite \u2013 but if you\u2019re looking for a new twist on the reality dating show, APTN\u2019s first-ever take on the genre sounds fresh and relatively wholesome. Indigenous singles attempt to match while going out (on dates) in and around The Forks in Winnipeg, where the Red River and the Assiniboine River have been happily married since time immemorial. Premieres June 15<\/p>\n

A Woman of Substance, Britbox<\/p>\n

This Channel 4 series now landing in North America is the second based on Barbara Taylor Bradford\u2019s 1979 popular novel of the same name, but the first this millennium. Yorkshire lass Emma Harte goes from rags to riches at the top of the fashion industry \u2013 with Jessica Reynolds and twice Oscar-nominated Brenda Blethyn playing the central role at different ages. Premieres June 24<\/p>\n

The Five-Star Weekend, W Network and STACKTV<\/p>\n

After losing her husband in a car crash, grieving food blogger Hollis Shaw (Jennifer Garner) organizes a girls trip to Nantucket, which brings together friends she\u2019s been close to in different periods of her life (Chlo\u00eb Sevigny and Regina Hall play a pair of them). The eight-part miniseries is based on a novel by Elin Hildebrand, who also provided the source material for Netflix\u2019s nuttier Nantucket whodunnit The Perfect Couple. Premieres July 9<\/p>\n

This crime thriller based on Marissa Stapley\u2019s 2021 bestseller stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Lucky Armstrong, a con artist who, after a heist goes wrong, ends up on the run from both the FBI and mob boss. Big screen queen Annette Bening plays the latter, continuing her gambit of reinventing herself as a smaller-screen baddie, which started with Dutton Ranch. Premieres July 15<\/p>\n

Last summer, Owen Wilson\u2019s small-screen comedy about a washed-up golfer, Stick, premiered on Apple TV. This summer, Will Ferrell tees up a more broadly comic series with a similar premise on the \u2018Flix. Ferrell stars as Lonnie (The Hawk) Hawkins, the PGA\u2019s biggest star circa 2004, who\u2019s going out on the circuit one last time. Fellow SNL regular Molly Shannon co-stars. Premieres July 16<\/p>\n

Sterling Point, Prime Video<\/p>\n

Yes, we\u2019ve arrived at the second coming-of-age story set at a Canadian lake that Amazon is releasing this summer. My Old Ass writer\/director Megan Park is the creator of this original tale, which sees a 17-year-old Manhattan Annie (Ella Rubin) unexpectedly inherit an island north of the border. Family secrets and new romances await discovery. Premieres Aug. 5<\/p>\n

Anna Pigeon, USA Network and Crave<\/p>\n

Morwyn Brebner, creator of CBC\u2019s Coroner, is the showrunner of this new Alberta-shot drama about a city-slicker-turned-national-park-cop, based on the novels by Nevada Barr. A cross-border collaboration between Bell Media and Versant in the U.S., Tracy Spiridakos (Chicago P.D.) plays the titular character, heading up a mostly Canadian and First Nations cast.
