Boyne Lodge Personal\u00a0Care\u00a0Home<\/a>\u00a0was awarded a Carman Area Foundation<\/a> grant, and those funds are\u00a0already\u00a0earmarked for\u00a0a\u00a0bladder scanner for residents.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Boyne\u00a0had\u00a0identified\u00a0the\u00a0need,\u00a0applied\u00a0for\u00a0and received the grant, and\u00a0now\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0just working out\u00a0the details for deciding which scanner would best\u00a0suit their purposes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Intent is for safer patient experience<\/p>\n

The\u00a0project\u00a0involves\u00a0purchasing\u00a0a bladder scanner for Boyne Lodge PCH to provide a\u00a0non\u2011invasive\u00a0method of assessing urinary retention, particularly for residents living with dementia.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

This equipment will improve resident comfort and safety, reduce unnecessary catheterizations and hospital visits, and support quicker diagnosis and treatment as part of holistic nursing care.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lisa Dales is the Manager, Health Services \u2013 Resident Care\u00a0with Southern Health-Sant\u00e9 Sud,\u00a0for\u00a0Boyne Lodge PCH.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She shared an\u00a0update\u00a0by phone on the process to date, as well as her role there.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI look after\u00a0the nursing\u00a0as a whole at Boyne\u00a0Lodge,\u00a0and\u00a0ensure\u00a0that\u00a0all of\u00a0our residents are getting all\u00a0that they\u00a0require.\u201d\u00a0Dales explained.\u00a0\u201cI also\u00a0ensure that there are adequate and trained staff here to look after the residents.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Need identified<\/p>\n

In that capacity, there are\u00a0inevitably\u00a0situations that come up\u00a0where\u00a0care\u00a0shortfalls\u00a0or\u00a0nice-to-have\u00a0items\u00a0are\u00a0determined, which\u00a0could improve\u00a0day-to-day\u00a0operational experiences\u00a0for both residents and the caregivers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, always.\u201d Dales agreed. \u201cOne of those\u00a0was a bladder scanner.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe’re\u00a0in the process of looking\u00a0for one that works for what we need it\u00a0for.\u00a0We don’t need anything really, really high-tech because we’re a personal care\u00a0home.\u00a0Originally, I\u00a0believe,\u00a0our nurse practitioner had thought that this would be\u00a0something we could use. After researching it, we have all agreed\u00a0that\u00a0is something that\u00a0would\u00a0benefit\u00a0our residents here.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nProcess underway for some time<\/p>\n

The\u00a0purchase has been under consideration for some time already.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s\u00a0been at least a couple\u00a0years\u00a0that\u00a0we thought that we have\u00a0been\u00a0looking into it, researching it.\u201d Dales\u00a0shared.\u00a0\u201cOur hope to find one\u00a0so that you\u00a0don’t\u00a0have to move people.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u00a0isn’t\u00a0something\u00a0standardized in long-term care, that all long-term care sites would have.\u00a0It’s\u00a0an extra thing that\u00a0we’re\u00a0just fortunate that we have such a supportive community that\u00a0will support us in becoming able to better care for our residents.\u00a0We’re\u00a0hoping it would reduce the amount of time our residents would\u00a0have to be transferred to a hospital.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Carman Area Foundation grant for the scanner was $15,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is our estimate of what we believe\u00a0it will cost after doing some research.\u201d Dales confirmed. \u201cThat is what we got for the grant of $15,000.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

So, I did a little write-up and then she\u00a0submitted\u00a0it to\u00a0the Carmen Area Foundation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a few options out there. So,\u00a0we’re\u00a0just trying to figure out\u00a0what would be the best fit.\u00a0Now that we have the money, we just need to narrow it down.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Once the decision is made and the device is in place, Boyne Lodge residents should experience less\u00a0potential\u00a0disruption.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope to get it because it, as I said, it\u00a0lessens the visit.\u201d Dales\u00a0shared.\u00a0\u201cIt could lessen\u00a0the visit to the hospital, decrease the stress to\u00a0residents,\u00a0hopefully\u00a0resulting\u00a0in a\u00a0quicker diagnosis for them, quicker treatment.\u00a0and it also lessens the risk of infection for residents.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSo,\u00a0that’s\u00a0the main\u00a0reasons\u00a0we are looking to get one.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
