Have you ever pulled a leggy-looking carrot out of your garden? What about one intertwined with another, holding it in a passionate embrace? <\/p>\n

Do they sometimes come out of the ground looking a bit\u2026 phallic? <\/p>\n

Yellowknife\u2019s Gallery on 47th Street\u2019s newest exhibition \u2013 Not Just the Birds and the Bees \u2013 celebrates suggestive produce.<\/p>\n

The gallery\u2019s owner, Ainsley Dempsey, said a member of a gardening collective, Lindsey Cymbalisty, came up with the idea for the exhibition.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe came forward and just said: \u2018You know how your vegetables sometimes grow kind-of sexy?\u2019 And I immediately knew what she meant,\u201d said Dempsey.<\/p>\n

The vegetables were harvested and photographed by people who unearthed them last summer, then the images were submitted to Cymbalisty and printed on canvas and paper.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of them are just carrots you wouldn\u2019t necessarily look twice at, but some of them they\u2019ve staged, and even just the lighting, it\u2019s really creative. I\u2019m surprised, actually, at the composition of some of them,\u201d said Dempsey. <\/p>\n

Olivia Williams was one of the first patrons to purchase a piece of art at the exhibition\u2019s opening night on Friday. <\/p>\n

\u201cI am constantly following the gallery\u2019s Facebook page and seeing what\u2019s coming up next,\u201d said Williams. \u201cWhen I saw the title of this one, I said, \u2018I should probably come in and check,\u2019 and it\u2019s definitely been worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gleeful, she said she didn\u2019t have words to describe what she witnessed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is definitely something that is leaving a long-lasting impression, and I\u2019m taking art home with me today,\u201d she said, \u201cbecause I want everyone to experience what I experienced today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Williams said she\u2019ll be hanging her new piece of art \u2013 titled Scarlet Nantes by Jen Potten \u2013 in her kitchen, so she can admire it while she cooks items from her own garden.<\/p>\n

Pertice Moffitt admired one piece in particular, titled This Knotty Showgirl Leafs Nothing to the Imagination by Heather Scott, which showcases two round carrot ends between plume-like pieces of kale.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like looking at what they\u2019re called, like the Pocket Rocket, Dirty Damsel. They\u2019re really good,\u201d said Moffitt.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019ve all seen vegetables like this and for someone then to take it and put it like this\u2026 I mean, it\u2019s great. I love it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not Just the Birds and the Bees runs until Wednesday, June 10.<\/p>\n
