Photo taken June 6, 2026 (Koby Mitchell, CityNews)<\/p>\nA Winnipeg man was found dead following a fire in a two-storey apartment building in Winnipeg\u2019s north end Friday.<\/p>\n
Winnipeg fire and paramedics (WFPS) responded to a 911 call at 1:24 p.m. reporting a fire in the 400 block of Ross Avenue.<\/p>\n
Upon arrival, crew found heavy black smoke coming from the building and brough the fire under control in about half an hour.<\/p>\n
Firefighters found a man in the suite where the fire started. He was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n
The tragic incident has left the neighbours shaken.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll I can really say is that it\u2019s really shocking, and really scary,\u201d says Ernestine Brooks.<\/p>\n
Hilary Herrman, who lives next door to the unit where the fire broke out says she heard loud explosions.<\/p>\n
\u201cI heard him go \u2018Ahhhh\u2019 and that was it,\u201d Herrman said. \u201cGoosebumps, very scared, petrified because I couldn\u2019t call 911.\u201d<\/p>\n
Herrman, who has lived in the building for six years, claims that earlier Friday morning, she overheard a man in the unit arguing with a woman, shouting \u201cthis is my place, get out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later, a man was circling around in the parking lot outside of the building screaming up to the unit \u201copen the door, open the door.\u201d<\/p>\n
Herrman said that she had a friend over at the time who slept through the blasts, but in a panic, managed to get them out safely.<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2018Carroll get up get up, we have to get out of here. There\u2019s explosions, like the building is blowing up. Get out it\u2019s next door,\u2019\u201d Herrman recalled telling her friend.<\/p>\n
Herrman said that before evacuating, she banged on her neighbour\u2019s wall calling his name. But she says she heard nothing.<\/p>\n
No other injuries were reported.<\/p>\n
An investigation by WFPS and Winnipeg police are ongoing.<\/p>\n
