{"id":720665,"date":"2026-06-07T08:43:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-07T08:43:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/720665\/"},"modified":"2026-06-07T08:43:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-07T08:43:13","slug":"five-iranian-soccer-players-get-us-visas-for-fifa-world-cup-some-staff-waiting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/720665\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Iranian soccer players get US visas for FIFA World Cup, some staff waiting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/international\/article-898562\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran&#8217;s<\/a> World Cup soccer players have received visas to enter the United States, a US official said days before their first match, but Iranian media said on Saturday that some administrative staff had not received their visas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The White House official told Reuters on Friday, 10 days before Iran plays in Los Angeles, that the players had received their visas, after Iran&#8217;s ambassador to Mexico, Abolfazl Pasandideh, had said on Thursday that they had not.<\/p>\n<p>First World Cup with hosts receiving war adversary<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Iran&#8217;s semi-official news agency Tasnim reported that those who had not received visas included Executive Director Mehdi Kharati, the secretary general of the soccer federation, Hedayat Mombini, and Media Director Mohsen Motamedkia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Staff members without visas would travel to Mexico with the team while efforts to obtain visas continue, the agency said.<\/p>\n<p>Iran&#8217;s football federation said the behavior of co-hosts the US &#8220;contradicts international sports laws&#8221; and it would take up the matter with\u00a0soccer&#8217;s world governing body <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/international\/article-898536\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FIFA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Members of Iran's national soccer team attend a farewell ceremony ahead of their departure to the 2026 World Cup in Tehran, Iran, May 13, 2026. (credit: MAJID ASGARIPOUR\/WANA (WEST ASIA NEWS AGENCY) VIA REUTERS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">&#8220;The US government, continuing its hostile actions against the national team &#8230; made a non-sporting and completely political decision to refuse visas for key managerial and administrative members of the Iranian national football team,&#8221; it said in a statement reported by Iran&#8217;s state media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">&#8220;This issue will definitely be pursued by the Football Federation through FIFA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">&#8220;As the responsible body, (FIFA) has the duty to follow up and finalize the visas for the managerial, executive, technical, and support staff of the Iranian national team who are currently in camp and whom the national team urgently needs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">FIFA was not immediately available for comment outside business hours in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Geopolitical Contest<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The US, Mexico, and Canada are co-hosting the biggest global sporting event, which starts on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">This is the first World Cup since its inception in 1930 in which a host nation is set to receive a country with which it is at war.<\/p>\n<p>Tehran negotiated a last-minute move of the team&#8217;s base from Arizona to Tijuana, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/tags\/mexico\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mexico<\/a>, due to the visa issues and a growing feeling in Iran that the squad\u2019s presence in the United States should be kept to a minimum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">They are scheduled to land in Tijuana early on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Iran is due to play their first Group G match on June 15 against New Zealand in Los Angeles, where they will also face Belgium before taking on Egypt in Seattle.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Rubio says US to bar people linked to Revolutionary Guards<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The US never formally said it did not want the Iranian team to stay on its territory, Ambassador Pasandideh said.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary of State Marco Rubio, however, told lawmakers on Tuesday that the US would not allow Iran to include in its delegation people linked to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/iran-news\/article-898407\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Mehdi Taj, president of Iran&#8217;s soccer federation, was denied entry for the tournament draw in Washington in December.
