{"id":720724,"date":"2026-06-07T09:35:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-07T09:35:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/720724\/"},"modified":"2026-06-07T09:35:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-07T09:35:14","slug":"viral-videos-show-calgary-transit-buses-running-red-lights-stop-signs-calgary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/720724\/","title":{"rendered":"Viral videos show Calgary Transit buses running red lights, stop signs &#8211; Calgary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Shelby Butler says the sun was just beginning to rise on May 15 as she went on her way to work, travelling through an area of Calgary she doesn\u2019t usually frequent.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>While stopped at a red light at the corner of 11 Street and 18 Avenue SE around 6:15 in the morning that day, Butler\u2019s light turned green and she began to make her way into the intersection.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when her dashcam shows a <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/calgary-transit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Calgary Transit<\/a> bus blowing through the red light in the intersection, just a few feet from clipping the front of her vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw the bus barrelling towards (the intersection) and I saw the light start to turn red,\u201d Butler explained. \u201cI started to go a little bit to see if (the bus) was going to slow down, but (the driver) didn\u2019t even try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Butler then posted the video on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was really just interested in seeing how the public would react and a shocking amount of them were defending the driver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Butler\u2019s dashcam video is one of two videos \u2014 taken less than two weeks apart \u2014 depicting Calgary Transit buses failing to abide by traffic signals.<\/p>\n<p>Another one taken by Norman Tang shows another city bus cruising through a three-way stop sign at Coventry Drive and Coventry Hills Way.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/national.jpg\" alt=\"Get breaking Canada news delivered to your inbox as it happens so you won't miss a trending story.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>Get breaking Canada news delivered to your inbox as it happens so you won&#8217;t miss a trending story.<\/p>\n<p>Calgary Transit says it\u2019s now reviewing both incidents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConcerns like these are taken seriously and investigated,\u201d Calgary Transit said in a statement to Global News. \u201cIf there are instances of unsafe or dangerous actions, we will follow up with the individual employees and take appropriate action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the city has experienced an <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11840555\/calgary-2026-traffic-deaths-record-pace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">unprecedented amount of danger<\/a> on its roads this year, Butler is concerned she came so close to adding to those statistics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt definitely would have done some damage to me, but honestly, there\u2019s passengers in there (and) my biggest concern was pedestrians, really,\u201d Butler said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cIt could have been a parent with a stroller, or kids, (an elderly person). They would not have gotten out of the way in time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 583, Mike Mahar, says watching those two videos also left him feeling concerned.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe understand you\u2019ve got four or five hundred transit operators out at any given time and unfortunately, they make human errors as well as everyone else,\u201d Mahar said. \u201cSo they don\u2019t happen all day long, but when they do, of course they\u2019re a concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mahar says the union will represent each bus driver during Calgary Transit\u2019s investigation, but each incident like this is very unique.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes if someone runs a red light, it may be by a fraction of a second. (It could be) because the driver is able to see a clear intersection and it was safer to coast through than it is to jam on the brakes and have some passengers fall or bang their head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Canada<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Mahar says each bus is also equipped with cameras that will aid the investigation, which typically only takes a few days to come to a conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Situations like this arise a \u201ccouple times a month,\u201d according to the union.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Calgary police say they have not received any reports on these particular incidents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can only investigate incidents after receiving official reports\u2026 we cannot begin investigations based on videos shared with us by third parties or on social media,\u201d the Calgary Police Service (CPS) said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs always, the CPS encourages and expects any driver within the city to obey all signage and traffic lights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Mahar says both Calgary Transit and the ATU hold operators to a high standard, but noted the number of people defending the operators in the online posts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese things happen.
