It\u2019s the first film of 2026 to hit that milestone. The animated adaptation of the hit video game was produced by Universal and <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/illumination\/\" id=\"auto-tag_illumination\" data-tag=\"illumination\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Illumination<\/a> in collaboration with Nintendo. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u201d cost $110 million to make, which is relatively cheap for an animated movie, so it is poised to be massively profitable. The previous film in the franchise, \u201cThe Super Mario Bros. Movie,\u201d was a <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/box-office\/\" id=\"auto-tag_box-office\" data-tag=\"box-office\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">box office<\/a> juggernaut, ending its run in theaters with nearly $1.4 billion in global ticket sales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u201d brings back Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Keegan-Michael Key and Jack Black, who all starred in the first film, and rounds out the voice cast with Donald Glover, Glen Powell and Benny Safdie. Aaron Horvath\u00a0and\u00a0Michael Jelenic\u00a0returned to direct the sequel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tUniversal\u2019s upcoming slate includes Steven Spielberg\u2019s conspiracy thriller \u201cDisclosure Day,\u201d Christopher Nolan\u2019s \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d and \u201cMinions &amp; Monsters,\u201d which was also produced by Illumination.
