Montreal Canadiens fans have gotten to know Janis Moser over the past few weeks.<\/p>\n

And they did not like him.<\/p>\n

The Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman was one of the most important players in the first-round series against the Canadiens, notably scoring the overtime winner in Game 2.<\/p>\n

And what makes the story even more frustrating is that Moser ended up in Tampa because of a trade that dates back to 2017.<\/p>\n

A trade made by Marc Bergevin.<\/p>\n

On June 15, 2017, the Montreal Canadiens general manager sent his top prospect, Mikhail Sergachev<\/a>, to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Quebec native Jonathan Drouin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We all know what happened next.<\/p>\n

The Mikhail Sergachev trade continues to haunt the Montreal Canadiens years later<\/p>\n

About two years ago, Tampa traded Sergachev to Utah in exchange for prospect Conor Geekie<\/a>, two draft picks, and Janis Moser.<\/p>\n

Moser enjoyed an excellent season, recording 29 points in 79 games with a +41 rating.<\/p>\n

With Victor Hedman<\/a> limited to 33 games this season, Moser was given a much larger role on the Tampa Bay Lightning blue line.<\/p>\n

Head coach Jon Cooper cannot say enough good things about him.<\/p>\n

“I call him ‘The Eraser.’<\/p>\n

He makes problems disappear.<\/p>\n

He’s not the best skater, not the most exciting player, and not the best puck-handler.<\/p>\n

But when you put it all together, you get a fierce competitor.”<\/p>\n

The Sergachev-for-Drouin trade hurt Montreal in 2017.<\/p>\n

And the ripple effects continue to benefit the Lightning years later.<\/p>\n

It is the kind of trade that people will remember for a long time.<\/p>\n
