Myths, folk tales, and negative media coverage mean people often link these flying mammals to vampires or blame them for disease outbreaks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucid00023j6o4gf3voqf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But bat populations around the world are in <a href=\"https:\/\/bmcecolevol.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12862-023-02159-1#:~:text=are%20currently%20experiencing-,population%20declines,-caused%20by%20multiple\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">decline<\/a>, and without them, ecosystems lose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdcnet.org\/collection\/fshow?id=npej_2024_0012_0001_0059_0102&amp;pdfname=npej_2024_0012_0001_0068_0111.pdf&amp;file_type=pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">key benefits<\/a> like pest control, pollination and seed dispersal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucid00033j6ouy5hvz17@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Through education, research and advocacy, Rodrigo Medell\u00edn, a senior professor of ecology at the University of Mexico, has made it his mission to change the way people see these animals.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucid00043j6om4xzj9kl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Medell\u00edn\u2019s fascination with bats began at the age of 13, when he held one in his hands for the first time. \u201cThat\u2019s when I decided to dedicate my life to their study and protection,\u201d he says. Since then, caves have become his happy place.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/img-4680.jpeg\" alt=\"Mexican ecologist Rodrigo Medell\u00edn wants the world to care more about bats.\" class=\"image_medium__dam-img image_medium__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_medium__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4032\" width=\"3024\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucid00053j6oanxe43ab@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe peace, the darkness, the silence apart from the bat squealing. I feel relaxed in a cave and all I do is I try to convey this feeling to the people that are with me,\u201d says Medell\u00edn, who is part of the Rolex Perpetual Planet Initiative and has won multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/explorers.nationalgeographic.org\/directory\/rodrigo-a-medellin#:~:text=He%20has%20received%20the%202004%20Gerrit%20S.%20Miller%20Award%20of%20NASBR%2C%20the%20Whitley%20Fund%20for%20Nature%20Gold%20Award%2C%20The%20Rolex%20Award%20for%20Enterprise%202008%2C%20among%20others.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">awards<\/a> for his work. He also founded of the Latin American Network for Bat Conservation, and Global South Bats, a network of bat scientists.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucid00063j6oi3tfwc3q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are over 1,400 bat species, which account for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/story\/coolest-mammals-earth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">around a fifth<\/a> of all known mammal species across the globe. They are the only mammals capable of powered flight, rather than just gliding, which allowed them to spread across the globe. They use highly developed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdcnet.org\/collection\/fshow?id=npej_2024_0012_0001_0059_0102&amp;pdfname=npej_2024_0012_0001_0068_0111.pdf&amp;file_type=pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">echolocation<\/a> to navigate and find prey at night, with some able to sense objects as small as human hair.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucid00073j6ov55w3802@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although certain species live for over 30 years, bats reproduce slowly \u2013 typically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdcnet.org\/collection\/fshow?id=npej_2024_0012_0001_0059_0102&amp;pdfname=npej_2024_0012_0001_0068_0111.pdf&amp;file_type=pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">one pup<\/a> per year. This makes it difficult for populations to recover from decline.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucid00083j6o4rt77ngd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey are very mysterious. Many people fear them, attack them, or despise them. They are probably the most unfairly treated animals on Earth,\u201d says Medell\u00edn.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucie00093j6omsgddun2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bats are often seen as symbols of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johnmooremuseum.org\/symbols-of-the-bat-in-different-cultures\/#:~:text=org\/noctule%2Dbat\/-,In%20the%20West,-%2C%20bats%20have%20been\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">evil and darkness<\/a>, largely due to their association with vampires and the supernatural in Western folklore. Throughout history in Christian Europe, the bat has been associated with the devil, evil spirits, and witches.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucie000a3j6oj4xlmyrm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Eastern cultures tend to view them much more positively. For instance, in Chinese culture, they are considered symbols of luck and happiness.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucie000b3j6okagsqg43@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, the perception of bats has worsened with the emergence of Covid-19, which some believe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/01\/29\/health\/bats-viruses-coronavirus-scn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">originated<\/a> in bats and they are often viewed negatively due to their association with diseases.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucie000c3j6o5nsyafzu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBats are certainly not fuller of diseases than your dog or cat. That has been horribly exaggerated,\u201d Medell\u00edn explains.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucie000d3j6ot5mos0qd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One of the most impactful services bats provide is pest control. Medell\u00edn notes that just one species along Mexico\u2019s northern borders numbers up to 30 million individuals, collectively devouring about 300 tons of insects every night.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucie000e3j6o0nsta3vg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But they do much more than keep insects in check. Fruit-eating bats play a crucial role in spreading seeds as they fly long distances in search for food.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucie000f3j6opeficale@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBy dropping seeds far from the parent tree, they help regenerate forests, maintain plant diversity, and support the life cycles of countless other organisms. The restoration of forests relies very heavily on bats,\u201d Medell\u00edn says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucie000g3j6o5p12uf3i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bats are also key pollinators for a wide range of plants, according to Medell\u00edn, including agave, the plant used to make tequila.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucie000h3j6og59n0kv8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite their critical ecological roles, populations worldwide face many challenges, most of which are caused by <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4730123\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">human activity<\/a>. Habitat loss, wind turbines, pesticide use, and most recently, white nose syndrome \u2013 a fungal disease \u2013 have all taken a serious toll. As a result, many species are now listed as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdcnet.org\/collection\/fshow?id=npej_2024_0012_0001_0059_0102&amp;pdfname=npej_2024_0012_0001_0068_0111.pdf&amp;file_type=pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">endangered or threatened<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cImagine what happens if we lose bats overnight,\u201d Medell\u00edn says. \u201cWithout them, crops would be ravaged by hungry insects, and mosquito populations would surge, drastically changing our way of life.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucie000j3j6o8oaju0zn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He is committed to convincing people that bats are important for their everyday wellbeing and believes that greater awareness could transform attitudes and turn fear into fascination.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucie000k3j6o9c2ndrz2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Through initiatives like bat-friendly agave farming, long-distance migration tracking and international conservation networks, he\u2019s working to protect bat populations while highlighting their role in pollination, pest control and ecosystem health.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucie000l3j6ofusjl6jn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI give people facts, images, evidence, and automatically they fall in love with bats,\u201d he says. \u201cIn my experience, anyone who had any contact with bats maintains that contact and starts expanding it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdzwucie000m3j6o9ctslug3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf there is anybody who is still afraid of bats, I would like to invite you to learn a bit more,\u201d he adds. \u201cThey are going to win your heart.\u201d\n
