The golf course is a place for stories. After rounds, foursomes gather in the lounge, reminiscing about the best and worst shots of the day. Most times, it leads to making plans for another round in the near future.<\/p>\n

Golfers are gluttons for punishment, of course.<\/p>\n

There are also stories embedded in the blades of grass on the fairway. Tales of the days before the sod was even laid, and how the bunkers and the greens never existed in a previous life.<\/p>\n

There is a rich history in the hills of Twin Stacks Golf Club<\/a> in Coniston, Ontario, a couple of wedge shots away from nearby Sudbury. On the property of the former Coniston Smelter, these nine holes inhabit the green space which used to be home to a local smelter.<\/p>\n

Opened in 1997 as a nine-hole course, there were some talks of expanding the property to offer a full 18-hole course, but it\u2019s remained nine holes throughout its nearly 30-year history. Twin Stacks is beloved by casual golfers, first-timers, and seasoned veterans for its layout, walkability, and hospitality.<\/p>\n

Hole number one is the signature hole, with its elevated tee decks, giving a panoramic view of the course below. In the background are the two namesakes for the course, the Coniston smokestacks, which were constructed in the 1950s.<\/p>\n

\u201cNumber one is the hole that everybody likes because we have the elevated tees, and you get a full view of the course,\u201d said Philippe Nave of Twin Stacks Golf Club. \u201cThat makes it a pretty good start to the round, with the stacks in behind there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The par-35 course has a mix of six par 4s, two par 3s, and one par 5, giving golfers a full range of challenge over the nine holes. From driver down to wedges, there\u2019s an opportunity to use every single club in the bag at Twin Stacks Golf Club.<\/p>\n

Golf can be a long and tedious game, but no matter how you\u2019re swinging that day, most rounds at Twin Stacks only take about two to two-and-a-half hours thanks to the nine-hole layout. It\u2019s an easy course to walk, and with a fairly open layout, it\u2019s an accommodating course for all skill levels.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of our crowd and our clients like to play nine holes. We\u2019re popular for that,\u201d Philippe Nave said.<\/p>\n

Due to popular demand by local disc golfers, Twin Stacks now offers a full 18-hole disc golf course on the property. Organizations like Nickel City Disc Golf appreciate having another offering in Greater Sudbury to play the game they love so much.<\/p>\n

The course is preparing to host a national disc golf tournament over Labour Day weekend, the Nickel City Open. Philippe Nave said they\u2019re expecting hundreds of golf players from across Canada to play in the two-day tournament, September 5 and 6.<\/p>\n

Adding disc golf to Twin Stacks had been under consideration for years, but Philippe Nave opted to give it a try last year, and it was a resounding success all around. They hosted two tournaments in 2025, with some players travelling from as far as Southern Ontario to play at Twin Stacks.<\/p>\n

Whether it\u2019s traditional golf or the ever-growing disc golf game, players love having a place to play in Sudbury. There\u2019s a great deal of history in the green space, but there\u2019s also a great deal of fun to be had every day.<\/p>\n
