Alexia Putellas has agreed personal terms with London City Lionesses<\/a>. Widely regarded as one of the best players in the world, Putellas would be one of the biggest signings in the history of the Women\u2019s Super League.<\/p>\n

Her arrival also represents an extraordinary moment for London City, an independently run club with only one season in the top flight.<\/p>\n

Putellas left Barcelona last month upon the expiry of her contract<\/a> with the club she represented for 14 years, during which she won 10 Liga F titles and four Champions League titles, as well as the World Cup with Spain in 2023<\/a> and twice being named a Ballon d\u2019Or winner.<\/p>\n

The 32-year-old, who also captained Bar\u00e7a, wants to pursue a new challenge and has attracted interest from some of the world\u2019s wealthiest teams. She has been heavily linked with a move to London City who have made no secret of their grand ambitions under the ownership of the\u00a0American businesswoman Michele Kang.<\/p>\n

Coached by Eder Maestre, a Spaniard, London City are also close to signing Mary Earps and Putellas\u2019s former Barcelona teammate Mapi Le\u00f3n on free transfers after agreements were reached with the pair<\/a>. Putellas would be the biggest coup of the lot, with it being known that she did not want to join a team that were, or could be, direct rivals to Barcelona.<\/p>\n

The midfielder has been enthused by the ambition of London City, who finished sixth in their debut WSL season and, in September, received approval to build a new \u00adperformance campus on 28 acres of land of \u00adCobdown Park.<\/p>\n

Putellas will join having also won Fifa best women\u2019s player award in 2021 and 2022, as well as receiving the Uefa women\u2019s player of the year award in the same years. She has 147 caps for Spain, the most recent of which came in the 4-0 World Cup qualifying victory against England<\/a> in Mallorca on Friday.
