BEIJING, June 9 (Reuters) – China’s exports picked up pace in May, as earlier front-loading by overseas buyers to pre-empt Gulf war energy costs fed through to \u200cshipments, while steady appetite for semiconductors and AI hardware lent additional support.<\/p>\n
Exports expanded 19.4% \u200cfrom a year earlier in U.S. dollar value terms, customs data showed on Tuesday, outpacing the 14.1% gain in \u200bApril and a 15% rise tipped by economists.<\/p>\n
Imports notched another strong month, climbing 27.4% versus a rise of 25.3% a month prior. Economists had forecasted growth of 25%.<\/p>\n
The Middle East conflict has yet to dent China’s exports, policymakers’ preferred growth engine, but economists say the buffer is temporary \u200cas stockpiling peaks, costs rise and \u2060buyers begin running down inventories while they wait out a ceasefire.<\/p>\n
Separate factory activity data for May showed a steep drop in new export orders \u2060from April’s two-year peak, when warehouse managers reported “booming” business amid a scramble by foreign factories to lock in supplies, suggesting the front-loading may be fading.<\/p>\n
Strong exports powered China’s $20 trillion economy past forecasts in \u200bthe first \u200bquarter, but momentum has since slowed, reinforcing concerns \u200bthat fragile domestic demand leaves it \u200cexposed to weaker global conditions and increases the likelihood of further policy support.<\/p>\n
Beijing is under growing international pressure to strengthen domestic consumption, as critics warn its heavy reliance on imported inputs and re-exports is distorting trade and squeezing other emerging economies out of higher-value manufacturing.<\/p>\n
The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development amplified that concern last week, noting in a report that nearly 60% \u200cof Chinese firms’ “market share gains can be explained by \u200bsubsidies received.”<\/p>\n
A new U.S. Federal Reserve paper found that \u200bChina’s trade surplus – measured against global \u200bGDP – has topped 1%, well above the peaks Japan and Germany hit \u200cin the late 20th century, and shows \u200blittle sign of narrowing. \u200bThat suggests persistent Chinese industrial overcapacity will reshape global manufacturing for years.<\/p>\n
A closely watched meeting last month between U.S. President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping helped cool tensions \u200bbut produced no meaningful breakthroughs, \u200cwhether on tariff disputes or cooperation over ending the Iran conflict.<\/p>\n
China’s trade surplus \u200bcame in at $105.43 billion in May, up from $84.8 billion a month prior and \u200bfrom a forecast of $92.1 billion.<\/p>\n
