{"id":72480,"date":"2025-08-15T21:02:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-15T21:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/72480\/"},"modified":"2025-08-15T21:02:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T21:02:11","slug":"the-five-lowest-ranked-players-to-ever-win-a-masters-1000-tournament-as-terence-atmane-reaches-the-semis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/72480\/","title":{"rendered":"The five lowest ranked players to ever win a Masters 1000 tournament as Terence Atmane reaches the semis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Terence Atmane has provided one of the great underdog stories of the 2025 ATP season with his incredible campaign at the Cincinnati Open.<\/p>\n<p>The Frenchman, just 23 years old, made the main draw of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/atp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ATP<\/a> Masters 1000 event through qualifying and has picked up huge wins en route to the semifinals.<\/p>\n<p>After overcoming Flavio Cobolli and Joao Fonseca, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/terence-atmane-admits-he-made-a-mistake-the-last-time-he-played-taylor-fritz-which-he-tried-to-correct-in-cincinnati\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atmane defeated Taylor Fritz<\/a> before knocking out seventh seed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/holger-rune\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Holger Rune<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the final four, he will now go toe-to-toe with the Wimbledon champion, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/jannik-sinner\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jannik Sinner<\/a>, as the world number 136 seeks to advance to a maiden tour-level final.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Should Atmane go all the way in Cincinnati, he will be among the lowest-ranked players to ever clinch a Masters title since the format\u2019s introduction in 1990.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"819\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2229371690-1024x819.jpg\" alt=\"Terence Atmane celebrates at the Cincinnati Open\" class=\"wp-image-120868\" \/>Photo by Shelley Lipton\/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images5. Chris Woodruff<\/p>\n<p>At the Canadian Open in 1997, world number 57 Chris Woodruff recorded several shocking results en route to the first and biggest title of his career.<\/p>\n<p>The American defeated second seed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/Goran-Ivanisevic\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Goran Ivanisevic<\/a> in the third round before knocking out Mark Philippoussis in the quarterfinals. <\/p>\n<p>Woodruff defeated Yevgeny Kafelnikov to advance to the final, where he was faced with three-time Grand Slam champion Gustavo Kuerten.<\/p>\n<p>He was forced to a third set against Kuerten, but ultimately managed to complete the upset, winning 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"740\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-1167225236-1024x740.jpg\" alt=\"Chris Woodruff in action at the Davis Cup in 2000.\" \/>Photo credit should read ODD ANDERSEN\/AFP via Getty Images4. Alexei Popyrin <\/p>\n<p>Last year\u2019s ATP season saw the fourth-lowest-ranked player to clinch a Masters 1000 title, when then-ATP number 62 Alexei Popyrin won in Montreal. <\/p>\n<p>Popyrin had never made it past the quarterfinals at a Masters event prior to his run at the Canadian Open in 2024. <\/p>\n<p>He earned victories against seeded stars such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/ben-shelton\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Shelton<\/a>, Grigor Dimitrov and Hubert Hurkacz on his way to the final, where he met <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/andrey-rublev\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andrey Rublev<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The Australian won in straight sets to hoist the trophy and cracked the world\u2019s top 25 for the first time in his career. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2166008861-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Alexei Popyrin with the Canadian Open title in 2024.\" class=\"wp-image-19729\" \/>Photo by Minas Panagiotakis\/Getty Images3. Mikael Pernfors<\/p>\n<p>In yet another Canadian Open shock, former Roland Garros finalist Mikael Pernfors made it to the championship match at the Masters tournament in 1993, ranked 95th in the world.<\/p>\n<p>En route, Pernfors picked up a huge win against four-time Grand Slam champion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/jim-courier\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Courier<\/a> and beat eighth seed Alexander Volkov in the last eight.<\/p>\n<p>He won his semifinal clash in straight sets and came back from a set down to emerge victorious in the final against Todd Martin, who had previously knocked out defending champion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/andre-agassi\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andre Agassi<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The Swede, at the time, was the oldest player to win a Masters title, aged 30. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"739\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-79965714-1024x739.jpg\" alt=\"Mikael Penfors in action at a BlackRock Tour event in 2008.\" \/>Photo by Matthew Lewis\/Getty Images2. Roberto Carretero<\/p>\n<p>At the 1996 Hamburg Open, Roberto Carretero made his way through qualifying to reach the main draw of the event.<\/p>\n<p>The world number 143 overcame four seeded players to get to the final, where he was pitted against fellow Spaniard Alex Corretja. <\/p>\n<p>Carretero won in four sets, in what was perhaps the most surprising result at a Masters event in history, as the player was virtually unknown. <\/p>\n<p>Following his triumph, he lost in the first round of Roland Garros and never added to his trophy collection after that. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"739\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-739919371-1024x739.jpg\" alt=\"Roberto Carretero in action at the Hamburg Open in 1996.\" \/>Photo by Stu Forster\/Allsport\/Getty Images5.
