A sack. A couple of tackles. A pair of pass knockdowns and just a whole lot of being a master snap disturber as part of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers season-opening win in Calgary last Friday.

And, sure, it’s a movie we’ve seen many, many times before in these parts during Jefferson’s 12-year Canadian Football League career — the last seven here in Winnipeg in blue and gold. After all, there’s always been a freakish-athletic aspect to the veteran defensive end’s game as a 6-7 beast with the strength of a powerlifter and the quickness off the edge of a basketball forward.

Now a couple other aspects have worked into his game and it’s the attention to detail and work ethic that will continue to make him a defensive force and possibly extend what is already a hall of fame career.

Jefferson, you see, is doing more off the field to stay healthy with more dedication to his body’s maintenance. There’s also a renewed drive to re-establish himself as a defensive wrecking ball after hearing the whispers this offseason following a career-low three sacks last year while still leading the league in pass knockdowns with 16.

“I heard it,” began Jefferson after Monday’s practice. “I put it somewhere on that shelf so that when that little bit of motivation I can go get it. You can look at the tape from last year — I only had three sacks but I’m pretty sure I missed a bunch.

“I was able to get into the backfield, I was able to win the one-on-ones, I was able to beat double teams, I was able to do all the stuff and get to the quarterback and apply pressure. I just wasn’t able to finish like how I wanted to. That’s something I’ve been hard on myself about this offseason.”

The early returns from last Friday were sensational, as the veteran end did his thing alongside new teammate Jake Ceresna, who wowed in his Blue Bombers debut with three sacks.

Together with the rest of their defensive line teammates and the team’s front seven, Winnipeg was able to get a ton of pressure on Stampeders QB Vernon Adams, Jr.

“It’s different,” said Jefferson of teaming up with Ceresna. “It does feel good to know that you have somebody else that can make play at any given time, especially if we’re on the same side giving offences trouble.”

Jefferson remains one of the Blue Bombers most-vocal leaders and is also driven by a personal goal — he wants to become the first player in CFL history to have 100 career sacks and 100 career knockdowns. He’s at 78 sacks in his career — now including 47 as a a Blue Bomber, which ties him with Elfrid Payton and Gavin Walls for fourth most in franchise history — and 96 career pass knockdowns, second most in league history to Eddie Davis, who retired with 111.

In recent years, he has made the knockdown both his trademark and a defensive work of art.

“It’s exciting. It feels real good to see the joy come out of the quarterback,” said Jefferson with a grin of the pleasure gained in a knockdown. “He thinks he has the check down for a first down or the wide receiver wide open and then he tries to throw it and I knock it down — or catch it. Then to see him go, ‘Ughhh…’, especially on second down because they’re getting off the field and I’m talking my little noise.

“That’s my game. One thing I’m trying to get better at is finishing around the hoop — finishing my rushes. When it comes to guys like Bo Levi (Mitchell, Hamilton’s QB), guys like Trevor Harris (of Saskatchewan), Vernon (Adams, Jr.) they like the quick pass. It takes away from my game. I like to be in the passing lane and if I can get my hands up knock a ball down or tip a ball and give the DBs the opportunity to get to it. It’s a part of the game that I embrace that helps my team.

“I’m trying my best to finish. Lowering my pad level, biting my mouthpiece when it comes to it and getting around to the quarterback, grabbing on, holding on, not falling over the top and hold on for dear life and bring him down to the ground with everything I’ve got. More of that this season.”

Finally, we asked Jefferson about his ‘shelving the criticism for motivation later’ comment and also suggested his resumé could have left him satisfied just to soldier on the way he has been.

Instead, he’s hungrier than ever.

“That’s not my mindset,” he said. “I’m a very competitive guy. I hold myself to a high standard and I know this team, this organization, wants and expects a lot out of me.

“I’m not somebody that’s just going to take the cheques just because and then just sit back. I work for my mine.”

Added head coach Mike O’Shea:

“I don’t spend a lot of time coaching him. He’s pretty polished and good to be around. I’m very fortunate in that regard. I get to sit back and watch him work.”

OUCH REPORT: The Blue Bombers exited Calgary with some injuries.
