The Gordie Howe International Bridge between Canada and the United States will open at the end of this week, Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/a> said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s positive news,\u201d Carney said when asked about an update on the bridge.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bridge will be open at the end of the week. (It is) a symbol, but also a fact of cooperation between our countries. Great for Canadians going across the border, Americans coming across the border, and for commerce,\u201d Carney said.<\/p>\n

The future of the bridge was thrown into jeopardy when U.S. President Donald Trump said in February that he will block the opening of a new bridge and trade route connecting Ontario and Michigan until the United States is \u201ccompensated for everything we have given\u201d Canada.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s position on the bridge \u201chas not changed,\u201d a White House official told Global News.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe President\u2019s position on the Gordie Howe Bridge has not changed. The Administration remains committed to securing the best possible deal for the American people,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n

The Canadian government funded the entire project, which will be publicly owned by both Canada and Michigan.<\/p>\n

The bridge will serve as a new crossing within the busy Ontario-Michigan trade corridor and aims to ease traffic on the nearby Ambassador Bridge. About a third of all trade between the U.S. and Canada occurs between Detroit and Windsor.<\/p>\n

Ontario Premier Doug Ford suggested he is still skeptical the opening will go ahead.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s see if it opens or not,\u201d he said Tuesday in Washington, D.C., where he is taking meetings with business groups and officials. \u201cHopefully it will, if they say it\u2019s going to open. I\u2019m just hearing two stories.\u201d<\/p>\n

Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson, who is responsible for the file federally, said that a date for the ribbon-cutting is being worked on \u201cright now\u201d and the\u00a0bridge\u00a0will be open in the coming days.<\/p>\n

Robertson, like Carney, did not answer questions about whether Canada offered any concessions to get the bridge opened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just want to salute those who constructed it on both sides, and looking forward to getting it done,\u201d Carney said.<\/p>\n
